Album Review

Christine McVie opted out of the reunited Fleetwood Mac's return to the studio for 2003's Say You Will, and listening to her 2004 solo album In the Meantime, it's easy to see why. She simply didn't want work on such a grand scale as Fleetwood Mac. She wanted to make a low-key, intimate, mellow record that's more about atmosphere than songwriting. It makes In the Meantime an unassuming return to recording — it's hardly a big splash that some might expect after a 20-year wait between solo records — and it's not bad. It's not particularly memorable since the songs are so low-key that they tend to float by one by one, sustaining the friendly, relaxed vibe, but not going much beyond that, either. Yet, there's a certain charm in that, especially in comparison to the big-budget, widescreen epics of such Mac albums as Tango in the Night, where each track was meticulously arranged and assembled piece by piece. Here, McVie is comfortable, playing with a sympathetic band, and sounding at ease for the first time in years. It's nice to hear her so relaxed, and while it's hard not to wish that it was easier to remember the songs once the album was finished, it's hard not to enjoy In the Meantime as it's playing.

Listen to NORTHERN STAR and FRIEND

These two songs are amazing!- -While this collection does not achieve YOU MAKE LOVING FUN status--it does indicate a wonderfully happy, content and senusous Christine--have you known her to be anything other than that? Thank you Christine--you are PERFECT!

mezzo-soprano seduction

For one who was supposed to be concert pianist...rare talent would have been lost if Christine had never sang! Oh what a wasted mezzo-soprano seduction! I also bought her last solo album in 1984 and saw her perform in the Orpheum Theatre in Minneapolis. The live performance was no different than the studio album. Very enjoyable concert. After all these years, this creative font of music just keeps cranking out tunes and sounds exceptionally good. Interesting to listen to this album and hear the story of Chris' love life over the years. Very creative healthy outlet. Tis a joy to hear every single song on this album. This album more than delivers. When I sampled this album online, I didn't think I would end up with something so solid. This beautiful voice will certainly sing in God's choir one day, but not today! You have to deal with us yet. This album definitely has a Steely Dan vibe and that's cool. When I hear the song "Bad Journey," it reminded me of "The Last Good Time In Town" by Chainsaw Joe of the Eagles. Collaborations possible? If I have any requests for this artist I'd guess it's a flashback to Tusk so I long to hear more of the piano/organ sound, on at least one song, like it did on Over & Over, Sara, Brown Eyes, or Never Make You Cry. Something of the ethereal vibe of the electronic organ reminds me of bagpipes or electronic harpsichord accompanied by a beautiful voice. What a trademark sound. Nevertheless, I think Christine's nephew did a wonderful job of producing this album. I'd hesitate to individually rate each song because the more I listen to this album the more it grows on me to be a solid 5 star album. I have been seduced and you should be too. Rock pop rarely is this perfect. No doubt, touring FM is crying for her.

Fine Wine

What I like about FMs individual artists is that they have a rich flavor together and a unique flavor as individuals. Together they are a fine winery. Individually they are their own fine wine. Christine McVie is in her current life's season with this album. Wine changes over time. It gets better. I like the flavor.

Biography

Born: July 12, 1943

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '60s, '70s, '80s, '90s, '00s

With her naturally smoky low alto vocal style and a knack for writing simple, direct, and memorable songs about the joys and pitfalls of love, Christine McVie has had a long and productive musical career while seldom insisting on being center stage. Born Christine Anne Perfect on July 12, 1943, in the small village of Bouth, the daughter of a concert violinist and a faith healer, a combination that just begs for uniqueness, McVie began playing the piano at the age of four and then found herself seriously...
