Album Review
Though Bob Mintzer normally works in the big band tradition, the tenor saxophonist does the occasional small combo session as well. In the Moment is one of those rare sets, recorded in one December 2004 session with the rhythm section of pianist Phil Markowitz, bassist Jay Anderson and drummer John Riley. A completely straightforward mainstream jazz set in the post-bop tradition, In the Moment mostly consists of originals (the highlight of which is Markowitz's lovely ballad "Forgiveness"), with a respectful take on the ballad standard "Time After Time" and a playful, swinging version of Eddie Harris' soul-jazz hit "Listen Here" thrown in for variety. Two showcases for the woody, funky tone of Mintzer's bass clarinet, "Blues" and "What's the Word," add another dimension to the album. In a way, there's nothing special about In the Moment, no mindblowing solos or particularly exciting interplay between the bandmembers. It's simply a solid contemporary jazz album with no crossover pretensions. That alone makes it an endearing, enjoyable listen.

Awesome
This is one fine Jazz album. One of those albums that you can listen to anytime, be at work, running, driving, or just seating at home and chilling. It is such a shame that this kind of music doesn't get any air time on the radio. Mintzer does it again.
Consistent. Wonderful. Lyrical.
Mintzer has always amazed me with his lyrical style. His ability to mix technical flurries with his affinity for the quarter note phrases always impresses me. He crafts lines as artfully as a master poet. This set of tunes lives up to the tremendous precedent he has set for himself. Well done, sir.
F_cking genus...
Mitzer knew exactly what he was doing when he made this album. Mitzer is definitely one of the top sax players of this day with his tone and rhymical abilities, and he could easily be matched with his peer Michael Brecker, rest in peace. If you appreciate jazz, you'd be a fool to overlook this album.
