Album Review

Dr. John finally struck paydirt here and was certainly In the Right Place. With the hit single "Right Place Wrong Time" bounding up the charts, this fine collection saw many unaware listeners being initiated into New Orleans-style rock. Also including Allen Toussaint's "Life," and a funky little number entitled "Traveling Mood," which shows off the good doctor's fine piano styling, and with able help from the Meters as backup group, In the Right Place is still a fine collection to own.

Rediscover This Classic ... Or Discover It For The First Time

I first purchased this release when it was released 30+ years ago and wore it out. In the decades that have passed, I haven't listented to these tunes (except 'Right Place, Wrong Time' which pops up on the radio every now and then). Lately tunes like "Same Old, Same Old", "Qualified" and "Shoo Fly" have been rattling around in my head so I decided to download this album. WOW. I had forgotten how great every one of these tunes are. And they have aged amazingly well. This LP could be released today and not sound dated at all. I recommend this anyone of any age who wants to hear some vintage and soulful R&B with a twist of cajun vibe. Long live the good doctor.

In The Right Place!

"Yeah, You Right!" We must have been "In The Right Place", listening to WBCN-FM radio, in the winter of 1973; when they announced that: "the first 200 people to show up at the Orpheum Theatre can get in for 2 bucks to see the Doctor John show!" Well, all our College homework was completed, so we ran over there with all the friends we could muster up (6-8 of us) and promptly proceeded to take over the entire first balcony. We could hear others around us asking:"Who the heck is Dr. John? Is he a real Witch Doctor? Where is New Orleans? What other songs has he done?" Well, "Peace, Brother, Peace"; 'cause "the Good Doctor Hisself" did his level best to answer all those burning questions because he was "Qualified" to do so! And his back-up band was none other than "The Meters" and boy, did they put us all into a "Travelin' Mood"! I can't speak for my fellow travelers, but this guy became "fully converted" in the Holy-Rollin' Church of New Orleans R&B! We have visited "the good Doctor"many times since, traveled down to the Cresent City for Mardi Gras 1980 and have helped to promote this very American brand of traditional music up here in the North! With "Right Place, Wrong Time", Dr. John broke into the College FM radio market and has matured as an artist, arranger and band leader for over 30 years! May this Doctor make you "very, very well' tonight! Start with this "Right" one, you can't go wrong!...by Grimmbo.

Years Active: '50s, '60s, '70s, '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s

Although he didn't become widely known until the 1970s, Dr. John had been active in the music industry since the late '50s, when the teenager was still known as Mac Rebennack. A formidable boogie and blues pianist with a lovable growl of a voice, his most enduring achievements have fused New Orleans R&B, rock, and Mardi Gras craziness to come up with his own brand of "voodoo" music. He's also quite accomplished and enjoyable when sticking to purely traditional forms of blues and R&B. On record,...
