With 2011’s In Waves Trivium hark back to their sophomore outing Ascendancy by mixing some early Metallica-inspired thrash-metal with progressive metal arrangements and the white-knuckled rage of modern metalcore. In Waves is also the first Trivium recording to feature the drumming of Nick Augusto who joined the Orlando, Florida quartet shortly after the departure of Travis Smith. The album’s intro “Capsizing the Sea” builds a hulking foundation with Augusto’s drums sounding like the mechanical blasts of a nail-gun before bleeding into the pummeling title-track. Both “Black” and “Built to Fall” prove to be album standouts that weld nouveau thrash to a more melodic accessibility which fans of post Cliff Burton-era Metallica are sure to appreciate. The guitar work on the former stretches into Slayer territory and then unleashes some impressive harmonic double-leads. Bonus track “Drowning In Slow Motion” is an epic assault of death-metal glory that effortlessly segues into melodic metalcore. “Ensnare the Sun,” only a minute and 22 seconds long, hints at a psychedelic direction. “Slave New World” closes with brutal bombast.

Great, but not Shogun
I love it. I don't think it matches up to Shogun though. The songs on this album are definitely killer though! Some of the songs are really epic like all these yesterdays. Great song!!! Go Trivium!
A Stellar Outing from this Floridian Metal Band
In Waves is another amazing album from Trivium, it combines Matt's growling/screaming vocals with the amazing instrumental work, makes for an impressive display of power, speed, and intensity in music. This album is more akin to Ascendancy than to Shogun and that's a good thing; while Shogun was a great album, In Waves is a better album on all fronts. This is also their first album without drummer Travis Smith, but Nick Augusto is a more than adequite replacement. Now on to the breakdown of each song
Capsizing the Sea - 8/10 Great intro song, and the piano is hauntingly beautiful.
In Waves - 9/10 The title track of the album has amazing breakdowns, and Matt's vocals are perfect. The lyrics are a little repetitive though.
Inception of the End - 8.5/10 This is a textbook Trivium song, nothing special, but still really fun to listen to.
Dusk Dismantled - 9.5/10 Nice and heavy, the way it should be. One of my favorites on the album.
Watch the World Burn - 8/10 This would have fit perfectly on The Crusade, it's much more of a mainstream song than Triviums others.
Black - 10/10 AMAZING!!! By far the greatest song on this album.
A Skyline's Serverance - 8/10 Good song with tons of growling/screaming. More aimed towards Trivium's early fans along with Dusk Dismantled
Ensnare the Sun (Bonus Track) - 8/10 Fun to listen to, gives a nice break from the intensity of the last song, and has a mysterious vibe to it.
Built to Fall - 7.5/10 In my opinion this is one of the weaker songs on the album, still a good song, but just lacks a certain heaviness.
Caustic Are the Ties That Bind - 8/10 Another staple Trivium song, fun as hell to thrash around to.
Forsake Not the Dream - 8.5/10 This song has a great pace to it and feels like a train pounding on your ears (In a good way).
Drowning In Slow Motion - 8/10 I love this song, but it still leaves a little to be desired.
A Grey So Dark - 7.5/10 A lot like Built to Fall, this song doesn't really leave me feeling like I just listened to a Trivium song, still a good song, just not a good Trivium song.
Chaos Reigns - 8.5/10 A nice heavy song that lives up to its title.
Of All These Yesterdays - 9.5/10 A ballad of a Trivium song, definitely different than anything they have ever made, it was a risky move on their part, but it more than paid off. Great stuff.
Leaving This World Behind - 5/10 What the hell? This song is all build up and then ends abruptly. I expected much more from the final song on the album.
Shatering the Skies Above (Bonus) - 9/10 Of course we have already heard this song from the God of War III soundtrack. It's a great song and it is heavy and fast.
Slave New World (Bonus) - 9/10 Sepultura is a great band and Trivium does them justice with this cover. The Cavalera brothers would be proud.
