Album Review

If 2001's Britney was a transitional album, capturing Spears at the point when she wasn't a girl and not yet a woman, its 2003 follow-up, In the Zone, is where she has finally completed that journey and turned into Britney, the Adult Woman. Like her peer Christina Aguilera, Britney equates maturity with transparent sexuality and the pounding sounds of nightclubs, but since she's not as dirty as Xtina, her spin is a little different. Where Christina comes across like a natural-born skank, Britney is the girl next door cutting loose at college, drinking and smoking and dancing and sexing just a little too recklessly, since this is the first time she can indulge herself. And that's what In the Zone is — Britney indulging herself, desperate to prove that she's an adult. She has been freed from her musical parent, Max Martin, who is absent for the first time from a Spears album, choosing instead to play the field and work with a bunch of different collaborators, including Madonna, Moby, the Matrix, Trixster, Roy "Royalty" Hamilton, Bloodshy & Avant, and R. Kelly. Since she's so determined to be a woman, not a girl, she has completely shed the sugarcoated big hooks and sappy love songs that drove her stardom, concentrating on music that glides by on mellow grooves or hits hard with its hip-hop beats. It's all club-ready, but despite some hints of neo-electro and the Neptunes, it doesn't quite sound modern — it sounds like cuts from 1993 or Madonna's Bedtime Stories and Ray of Light. Production-wise, these tracks are not only accomplished but much more varied than any of her previous albums — in particular, Moby's "Early Mornin'" has a sleek feel, Mark Taylor's "Breathe on Me" is alluring, and the Bloodshy & Avant productions, "Showdown" and "Toxic," are irresistible ear candy in what is surely Britney's most ambitious, adventurous album to date.

When I first bought this album, I did what I always do. I listen to every song once, and rate them on a scale of 1 to 5. My first thoughts were, "Wow... what a waste of my money..." "Me Against The Music" seemed too repetitive. "(I Got That) Boom Boom" was a disaster after the first listen. (The Ying Yang twins were so annoying I felt ashamed to be listening to such trash.) "Showdown" was the better of the previous two, and "Breathe On Me" was the best of the first four. "Early Mornin'" felt extremely annoying, but got stuck in my head like it had been glued to it. "Toxic"... well, who doesn't love Toxic? "Outrageous" was fair. Nothing special, but nothing bad. "Touch Of My Hand" was... appauling the first time I listened to it. After the song, I thought "...Wow... Britney went from innocent school girl to THIS?" However, it is a great song. And I recommend it. "The Hook Up" was extremely weird, but had a nice beat. "Shadow" was my favorite on the album from the first listen. It's a beautiful, moving, almost slightly dramatic song that I adored. And "Brave New Girl" had a nice, simple glow about it that made it stand out. The cheeriest, happiest song on the album. I liked it. "Everytime" was another stand out. It has a strange similarity to "Out From Under" from the Circus album. It was a nice song though. So I had finished the album, and I regretted buying it. Sure, some songs were good. Like Breathe On Me, Toxic, Touch Of My Hand, Shadow, Brave New Girl and Everytime, but the rest was so... different. I pushed myself later into listening again, to see if the album grew on me... wow, it really did. Everything was much less annoying, and I made a wise decision buying it. Around the second time...

Me Against The Music - 7/10. Much better.
(I Got That Boom Boom) - 5/10. (Still not great, but less annoying.)
Showdown - This song really stood out the next few times I listened to it. 7.5/10.
Breathe On Me - 8/10 Awesome song. The chorus is simple, but great.
Early Mornin' - 6/10 Not bad. Noting special, but it's worth listening to.
Toxic - Awesome song. One of her classics. 9/10
Outrageous - 7.5/10 Slightly annoying, and really good at the same time. Good song.
Touch Of My Hand - FILTHY. But you can't help but to love it. 8/10
The Hook Up - Still really weird. But listenable. 5/10.
Shadow - Wow. Even better than the first time I listened to it. It's an amazing song. 10/10
Brave New Girl - 7/10 The chorus is awesome. The rest is okay. Nothing too special.
Everytime - Not as good as Shadow, but still very pretty. 7/10

If you're a Britney fan, and you're thinking of buying this album, I suggest you do. You may not like it at first, but it will grow on you. I promise.

In The Zone - 7/10.
