Album Review

This disc is a re-release of a recording made in the studios of Radio France in 1986. It features three ragas, of 30, 20, and ten minutes in length. The ten-minute raga ("Dhun Man Pasand") was improvised by Shankar at the studio from international sources and is very dynamic and accessible. The longer ones, especially the 30-minute raag, require more work on the part of the listener, but repay the effort. The ragas feature Shankar on sitar, the masterful Kumar Bose on tabla, and two tampura players. The recording is good but not crystalline, with the tabla drums being recessed into the background. A very good disc. Not for the casual listener, but those serious about Indian classical music need not hesitate. [Movie Play issued their edition of the album in 2000.]

Loved it

I was attracted to this album because of the artwork - Ravi Shankar's dark outline looks like Alfred Hitchcock. But his music is not mysterious, it is mystic! I thoroughly enjoyed both the ragas, though "Dhun" is my favorite. Try it and I'm sure you will like it too.

Otherworldly...

This music seems to be from some other world and listening to it is an otherwordly experience. Charukauns is a unique and interesting creation of Ravi Shankar - the juxtaposition of two moods Charukeshi (romantic with a tinge of pathos), Malkauns (sublime and serious) makes it a special item for deep listening. Highly recommended.

Incredible for sure

Ravi Shankar is always incredible, he is still touring at the age of 87! Of course, he was much younger when this album was recorded and one can see his mastery of sitar in this recording. Charukauns is for all-out classical listeners and the light classical is for less serious admirers. Give a try!
