Fantastic modern compositions for the Renaissance Lute
McFarlane has been writing and performing these compositions in concerts for many years. Some are written in the style of established composers (e.g. “Dowland’s Midnight,” or "Gigue" based loosely on the style of Weiss). Most, however, are best described as tone poems, which evoke specific events and locations, described in detail in the booklet notes. They range in mood from quiet and contemplative (“Cathedral Cave,” “Augusta") to frenetic (the audience favorite “Pinetops”). All are highly rhythmic and beautifully melodic. The music styles vary from classical to "Windham Hill style new age" to ol' fashioned West Virginia pickin'. There is something here for every musical taste and mood. While all the works began here as lute solos, in this recording almost half of the pieces are played in ensemble with various combinations of instruments (bass, flute, harp, percussion, cittern, harmonium and bowed strings). These combinations are very effective, with the supporting instruments sometimes providing simple accompaniment and other times adding to the melodic development. McFarlane’s playing is flawless and the music is constantly colored with variation in tone, volume, attack and phrasing.
