Album Review

Although they like to call their style "extreme power metal," in actuality Dragonforce are an honest to goodness prog metal band. If you were to mix the lyrics/subject matter of Dio, the guitar work of Yngwie Malmsteen and Iron Maiden (shredding and twin-guitar harmonies, respectively), impeccable double bass thrash metal drumming, and the vocals of Helloween into one high-calorie metallic cocktail, you'd get Dragonforce. Hailing from London (do all prog metal bands come from Europe?), the quintet sticks to the game plan laid out on its first two releases, as evidenced by 2006's Inhuman Rampage. Admittedly, this sort of genre is certainly not for everyone — some would say it goes beyond parody — while some of the song titles sound like rejects from a high-school battle of the bands contest ("Revolution Deathsquad," "Operation Ground and Pound," etc.). But for those who regard technique over tunefulness, Inhuman Rampage should be a worthy listen. And here's a challenge for budding prog metallists everywhere — it may be impossible to play your instrument as technically precise as these lads from London do on "Storming the Burning Fields." A fine soundtrack while playing your next level of World of Warcraft. [The 2007 CD/DVD edition includes two music videos, a band documentary, and one live performance.]

Real review here, forget the iTunes garbage above

I'm sorry the person who reviewed this album for iTunes is a complete tird and should not be allowed to publish any more reviews about metal, stick to your Britney reviews and steer clear of the metal section. Comparing this band to a high school project or even calling this band "budding" and lastly saying the target audience is WoW players is just plain WRONG. If you are a fan of Dream Theater; Queensryche, Iron Maiden, Shadows Fall, etc, or a real fan of (non-MTV) hard rock/metal/hardcore of any type then this band belongs on your radar. Dragonforce is the leading the charge of highly technical metal, that only a handful of people in the world can pull off in such a constant and driving manner, just about every song pins you to the wall for on average of about six minutes. If you are a musician (metal fan or not) then this band is at least worthy of your ears based on the sheer technical difficulty of doing anything as fast and precise as they do. The energy levels are insane, great driving music, just plain awesome. And lastly these guys are not "up and coming" they have been kicking butt for nearly 8 years now. and remember metal/hardcore fans, iTunes is not the end-all source for music, go to shows, read the thank yous inside your album covers for bands that are on the scene with the bands you enjoy...there's a whole world out there that MTV and iTunes ignore...

Dragonforce Pwns!!!!!

Don't just buy Through the Fire and Flames, get the whole album. Trust me this is totally worth your money. Whoever said that every song sounds the same obviously hasn't listened to each song in depth. Each song is unique, and I'm not lying, because if you played a random 10 seconds from one of these songs I would know which one it was. Also, check out Sonic Firestorm, because it is just as good as this album.

Lemme get this strait here

Everyone either hates or loves Dragonforce. I've never honestly met anyone who was in between. The problem is this, Through the Fire and Flames was on Guitar Hero. I will admit that's how I found this band, but for some people it's become a foot hold they use to beat down this band. The problem with making this song in guitar hero was that it affiliates the song with gamers and nerds (which is untrue to say as not just nerds play video games). As a result some people deny this band and brand them with a huge NERD ALERT sign, similar to how people call World of Warcraft nerdy without even having played it (I myself have played but do not play it because I think the monthly fee is as ridiculous as having to rent the movies I want on iTunes when I can buy them at a store). All that aside Dragonforce is great. You can argue that the band uses echo and table effects to get that "super crazy" fast effect going that the band has become very popular for. You can argue that the songs sound horribly similar (which is why this review is 4 star not 5). All in all though, you buy and rate songs on how they sound, without any bias or pre-made opinions. In that regard particularly, Dragonforce breaks boundaries never before broken. The songs sound great and have an intense and pumping effect. I don't think I know a single jock on the sports teams who doesn't have at least Through the Fire and Flames on their iPod. The band is at least worth looking at before you decide against a truly amazing expiriance in music. I hope I have left a good blast in your overly pompous cans you pre-decided punks!

Biography

Formed: 1999 in London, England

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

The U.K.-based power metal sextet Dragonforce formed in 1999 around the twin-guitar assault of Herman Li and Sam Totman, keyboard player Vadim Pruzhanov, and the powerful vocals of ZP Theart; drummer David Mackintosh and bass player Adrian Lambert joined the lineup later. Dragonforce had already toured with the likes of Halford and Stratovarius before the release of their debut, 2003's Valley of the Damned. The success of that record earned the melodic rockers a worldwide audience, resulting in a...
