iTunes Review
Motown’s most successful artists (Marvin Gaye, Smokey Robinson, Stevie Wonder) fought for their artistic freedom in the 1970s and rewrote the rules of soul music until it encompassed whatever social or musical ambitions its creators had in mind. Wonder’s 1973 Grammy-winning LP Innervisions shared the growing social concern of Marvin Gaye’s 1971 masterpiece What’s Going On with the rising urban conflicts playing out in “Too High” and the album’s Grammy-winning hit “Living For the City,” while the increasingly scandalized President Nixon is skewered in “He’s Misstra Know-It-All.” It also shared many musical ambitions as well, incorporating a flowing sound and groove that made the album as much a long stylistically similar suite as a collection of individual tracks. It’s the mark of a great artist when their innovations sound perfectly natural and practically ordinary many years later as the mainstream accepts and reuses the innovations. The lush melodic “Golden Lady” and the strutting funk of “Higher Ground” and “Jesus Children of America” stand up as contemporary sounds still much emulated several decades later.

You absolutely MUST have this
For those of you who know exactly what there is to love about Stevie Wonder, this album has it. All his funkiest styles and musical tendencies are captured in this album. Although I enjoy pretty much everything he has released in his long (LONG) career, I feel he hit on something in the 70's that will forever keep him among the ranks of our greatest musicians. Every single track on Innervisions is more than worth listening to, unlike many albums. There is absolutely no filler, just raw, funky vibes, with Stevie's very recognizable trademark style.

Stevie Wonder is not your typical R&B artist. He gives you an eclectic mix of folk, soul, latin and funk that just seems to make sense. It's almost like watching a movie or walking through an art gallery. Once I finished listening to the album, it moved me. "Songs in the Key of Life" may be the most popular, but this is definetely Stevie's masterpiece. Recommended singles: Higher Ground, Living for the City, Don't You
Desert Island Disc
THIS is one the BEST albums ever made. Every song is a gem, it is almost a 'concept' album from start to finish. This is one of the few titles that deserves to be called a "desert island disc". What Stevie said in the early 70's is even more relevant today, perhaps more so. But although this is a 'message' disc, it's also a funky, party, dance disc. It's also a great romantic piece. I love this album. Thanks, Stevie.
