Album Review

James Newton Howard's score for director Sydney Pollack's espionage thriller The Interpreter is dutifully chilly and elegant, forgoing the brassy bombast of the summer blockbuster and focusing on serving as a non-intrusive background to illuminate the furrowing brows of Nicole Kidman and Sean Penn. Howard, who has mined similar territory for M. Night Shyamalan, phones in enough atmosphere to cover three new seasons of The X-Files, relying on drawn-out, two-chord motifs with the occasional flash of electronica and Norwegian worldbeat siren Kirsten Bråten Berg to provide almost constant tension.

Good Stuff

This movie I believed had a more psychological feel rather than a spy/mystery feel, so the music does a great job in creating the atmosphere of a situation of uneasiness and drama. Best song has to be "Assassin," the climax of the movie where it starts slow and builds into a roaring mix of orchestral music combined with a neat beat, then it settles down. The whole soundtrack has a healthy mix of slow, piano-driven ballads great for concentration and study (Tobin Comes Home, Silvia is Followed), while others can really heighten the senses and create a good atmosphere of suspense with "Guy Forgot His Lunch," or "Assassin." If you like to study with some inspiration, this will be the soundtrack for thee. Goes well with the film as well. Enjoy.

The Interpreter Soundtrack

My favorite things about this album are the two Atolago tribal songs. It has become increasingly difficult for me to find genuine tribal music for my iPod.

GREAT!

Nicole Kidman and Sean Penn were great in the movie. So that means that the soundtrack would be great too. Great job guys!
