Masterful composing & varying styles, a recommended purchase

KevOz is certainly able to emulate the high caliber musicians of labels such as Hearts Of Space & the like, but its far from being the only string to his bow. One consistent factor throughout Into Orbit is the fact that the tracks have a certain sense of style, panache & power, all of which marks KevOz as a musician of some skill. Every track achieves what it sets out to do, be it the funky house of the title track (which even includes some scratching effects for that essential old school flavor!) or the reflective tender closer "Goodbye" which is where Osborn demonstrates that he is able to match the established masters in producing majestic touching music. "You, Me & The Stars" takes you by the hand for a romantic late night stroll, being laid back, tender & soothing. In short, perfect picture music for those romantic moments. The music here also has undoubted potential for soundtrack work, the superbly dramatic opener "Magical Galaxy" being a prime candidate with its infectious main theme & thunderous, majestic rhythms. "The Lost City" also follows a similar route but is less urgent by way of its restful ambient chords that carry the latter stages of the track. In contrast, "A Newer Cool" builds up from its ambient beginnings, where a slightly cold leadline effectively contrasts the serene spacey chords into another majestic & powerful number. "Eyes On You" manages to stay the right side of over-sugary to be an infectious & almost poppy number, thanks mainly to the up-front rhythms & effective use of voice samples as the track’s main focus. "Skybaby", with its resonant rhythms & use of voice samples takes the album into the realms of spacey electronica & is another demonstration of the artist’s versatility, being almost reminiscent of Massive Attack. Likewise, "Cinematic" adds some shuffling trip hop rhythms to an otherwise spacey outing, all of which demonstrates that KevOz is not afraid to widen his musical palette & take on board the more contemporary & progressive musical styles. The three part "Love Goddess" can easily be seen to be a mix & match of these styles as the ambient spaceyness of the first part is contrasted sharply by the manic second part, which is a full on techno/rave blitz. In time this fades into the third part, disjointed solitary piano notes lasting only a few seconds before they too become nothing. By way of some masterful composing & varying styles, KevOz has produced an album that ought to have wide appeal & is a recommended purchase.

Well-executed collection of EM tunes

KevOz is an imaginative and talented electronic keyboard player. Into Orbit represents an ambitious attempt to cover quite a few sonic terrains. "Magical Galaxy" features dynamic keyboards (sounding a bit organ-like) playing out a circular refrain on top of a propulsive and somewhat proggish-sounding drum kit; yet the bridge is a subdued piano-led affair. The title cut has a cyber-disco sound to it with drum programming that is a cross between Madonna's "Vogue" and Harold Faltermeyer Beverly Hills Cop soundtrack. Funk is the order of the day, as the track features some scratching and vocal samples as well. Keyboard work is vibrant and fun on this song, which I like a lot. My favorite track, "A Newer Cool," is up next, and despite its name, it's not at all chill-out in flavor nor is it Richard Bone-ish, either. Instead, it's a moody affair featuring a just-spooky-enough refrain on both plucked-string synths and clipped flute-like samples (the clipped flute plays the harmony to the lead melody line). The cut revs up as it goes along, dialing up the intensity and volume until by the end it's a powerhouse of rhythmic yet spacy EM. The introduction of a repeated musical phrase on high-pitched bell-tones (again in a minor key), along with more rapid rhythms as the cut develops, gets my blood pumping faster each time I play it. "A Newer Cool" is easily, in my opinion, the standout song on the album. But there are other goodies on Into Orbit, as well. "You, Me & The Stars" opens with whooshing keyboards and arrhythmic bell tones before setting sail on pulsing bass notes, synth piano, and gentle synth chords. The song echoes the work of artists like Geodesium and Richard Bone in that it is melody-rich in a major key yet contains spacy musical elements. "Eyes on You" is a lot of fun. The song has a repeating vocal sample that sounds like a foreign language (or it could be wordless vocalizings). The percolating dance beats, cheery yet SF-oriented synth effects, and vocals combine to create an interesting. "Skybaby" is future-funky to be sure, but with a dash of retro-disco thrown in as well. Once again, the vocal samples are out front (a sultry female voice singing/sighing). Vocoder effects and reverbed organ, with a bed of chugging and shuffling rhythm, weave a sensuous dance-floor hypnotic spell - and when Osborn introduces a mellow piano and synth-string bridge, the cut veers into seriously cyber-hip territory. Those who enjoy music from the Cursor Club collective or recent Richard Bone albums or even courageous Berlin music fans may enjoy peeling back the layers on the ten tracks on Into Orbit to find out what's underneath. They'll discover a sometimes lighthearted, sometimes moody, but always well-executed collection of EM tunes. I enjoyed this album, especially "A Newer Cool", the title track, and "Eyes on You". It handily earns a positive - and perhaps even an enthusiastic - recommendation.

Listen with your headphones, and head out of this world

Into Orbit has what it takes to be at the top of the heap! It takes you into a spinning galaxy with lush new age soundscapes with smooth techno beats. The Museum of Natural History's Planetarium would definitely have a use for this one! Sit back, relax, listen with your headphones, and head out of this world.
