iTunes Review

There might be no one more appropriate than Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder to score the soundtrack to a film about a brazen, if deluded, young man who left behind the society he rejected and wandered into the Alaskan wilderness where he died of starvation. Vedder’s vocal bluster has always harnessed bravado in its intensely serious croak. He’s the perfect leader for a hard rock group, but he’s always had aspirations to join the campfire singalong and many of Pearl Jam’s best moments were its quietest. Now, playing nearly all the instruments himself and singing to songs he wrote as much for mood and empathy, Vedder still sounds grandiose, but more relaxed. His best lyrics have always been more imagistic and symbolic than narrative and here the pieces of human desperation come forth in short, resonant bursts. “Got my indignation but I’m pure in all my thoughts,” sings Vedder during “Guaranteed.” He doesn’t try to soften this crazy, mixed-up kid. The kid’s dreams were wild and borne of frustrations, both personal and societal. Vedder charges up the hard rock for “Setting Forth” and “Hard Sun,” but mostly he settles into a luminous lope that makes these songs tragically sad.

INDIO is back!!

All you who are wondering and no one clued in (for the 100 reviews I read) that HARD SUN is a remake from a band called INDIO. Released in 1989, BIG HARVEST is one of my all-time favorite albums. Joni Mitchell sings backup on the Hard Sun track, and any Peter Gabriel fan will LOVE this. If I had the album in front of me I could confirm, but I believe Manu Katche, David Rhodes and Bill Dillon play on this album as well. For all you EV fans this IS a great album, and it reminds us all that there are still Springsteen and Dylanesque troubadors in our generation. Eddie's voice is like gold.

Excellent Work by Vedder

I haven't seen this movie but I've read the book. If I were to have music playing in the back of my head while reading this story it might sound like this collection of songs by Eddie Vedder. I feel that Vedder really connects with the main character in this story. Major props to Sean Penn for having Eddie do your soundtrack... Could this album be Oscar worthy?

Earth Rock

We each narrate our own stories and thru his music Eddie Vedder shows that he is bound by no code other than his being. Vedder displays his versatility by playing all the instruments. Words that are melodic and music that at times seem like a lullably capture the free spirit of Chris McCandless as he was portrayed by Krakauer and most recently Sean Penn. From he big sounds of 'Hard Sun' to the quieter gestures like 'The Wolf', "Into the Wild" is an excellent piece of music that plays well as a whole. I purchased the album as a pre-order thru Ten Club and that version does not include any of the tracks beyond 'Guaranteed'. Kudos to iTunes for offering the Deluxe Version. Now I've got two copies. Congrats to eV for a worthy solo debut!!

Years Active: '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s

Along with Kurt Cobain, Eddie Vedder reluctantly became a celebrity and an alt-rock spokesman when his band, Pearl Jam, hit the big time in the early '90s. But things didn't come easy for Vedder. With a tumultuous home life as a youngster, he turned to surfing and rock music as a teenager — most notably such classic rockers as the Who, Neil Young, and the Doors — as well as such punk bands as the Clash and Minor Threat. His residence alternated between Chicago and San Diego, as he formed...
