iTunes Review

For decades New Zealand’s Neil Finn has been one of pop music’s superior craftsmen. From Split Enz to Crowded House to his solo work, his penchant for the hook has always been matched by his clear, earnest vocals that compliment lyrics that are never afraid to add weight when necessary. His solo career was satisfying, but there’s nothing quite like the idea of a band coming together to find their common ground and offer their own special touches. Songs such as “Saturday Sun,” “Either Side of the World” and “Twice If You’re Lucky” are emboldened by harmonies and bright epiphanies where the world continues to shine in the face of all adversity. The slower tunes, “Falling Dove,” “Isolation” and Even If,” in particular, add a luminous austerity that is thrown into relief by the sweet guitar power of “Inside Out.” “Elephants” coasts with a vague psychedelic buzz. The Deluxe Edition ends things with “Turn it Around,” a beautiful finale.

Another Flawless Release

In typical Crowded House (and Neil Finn) fashion, this album is brilliant on many levels. The lyrics are gorgeous, subtle, at times achingly beautiful. I was pleased to see Neil re-form the group after an absence of so many years (while releasing super-strong solo albums) and with this second release, it's clear the "revised" band is at a new peak. I'm anxious to see the concert supporting this release in LA next month. Crowded House live is worth every penny.

Difficult... But grows on you... And stays with you...

Having been a Finn fan since the "I Got You Days," I have always been a sucker for the easy and catchy Neil Finn songs. The more somber tunes that populate this album are, on first listen, a disappointment. However having listened to it several times now the songs are sinking in quite nicely. To me, Twice If You're Lucky stands shoulder to shoulder with any Finn composition. So while I can't give it 5 Stars... it sure is a 4 Star effort! Buy it...put it on replay... and enjoy!!

Don't Miss This Great Album

...but since you are viewing this review, there is a chance you won't, so just buy it! Like every other Crowded House record before it, Intriguer is filled with intelligent lyrics, gorgeous melodies and flawless production. The band sounds great and Neil Finn, never better. Hearing him sing the line "When you're in luck/the world moves with you/whatever you want/they are happy to give you" from Either Side of the World reminds me of not only what a great songwriter he is, but singer as well.

As some of the other reviews claim, Intriguer didn't grab me at first as I had hoped. I bought it yesterday and listened to it about 5 times to be ready for the Crowded House show I attended last night (which was awesome- go see them if you can!). After just a few listens and hearing the new material live, I was hooked. Get hooked too- buy Intriguer!
