iTunes Review
Ramona Falls is a solo project by Brent Knopf, who is also a member of the experimental indie rock band Menomena. Though he did write all the songs and played multiple instruments, Knopf didn’t create Intuit alone. He worked with 35 different musicians — including Mirah, Janet Weiss, and members of the Helio Sequence, Loch Lomond, and Talkdemoni — and that collaborative spirit infuses nearly everything here. It’s a complex album packed with many ideas and intriguing overlapping parts; filled with quirky melodies and unorthodox arrangements the songs morph quickly as on the haunting and unsettling “I Say Fever,” with its crunchy textures and loud-soft dynamic, or the brooding and tense “Russia,” which starts with an acoustic guitar figure and then builds into epic territory. Elsewhere, there are stirring string parts, sharp use of piano and other keyboards, strong harmony singing, and excellent percussion throughout. On Intuit, Knopf has expertly brought together many moving parts to craft a cohesive album that represents a creative identity quite separate from his work with Menomena.
Customer Reviews
I can't stop listening to this awesome album!
I am a big Menomena fan, so I was really excited to get my hands on some new material from the guy that wrote "Evil Bee" and "Wet & Rusting". This album does not disappoint. Although, "Intuit" definitely offers a distinct feel from Menomena, it still satisfies the same desires for interesting, intellectual, and original compositions. From the quiet whispering piano at the opening of the album, to the reverberant tone of the closing song, "Intuit" really takes the listener on an emotional journey through the brilliant, original, and often quirky mind of Brent Knopf. I love the way the songs build and expand on one another, taking you through a listening experience that feels complete, satisfying, and transformative. There is also an emotional integrity to these songs, that is generally missing in most "indie rock" lyrics. You can tell that Knopf is honestly trying to work through some difficult emotional experiences, and he does so in a way that is completely relateable, yet never cheesy or too heavy-handed. It is a difficult line to walk. I especially love the way Knopf layers sounds and builds up energy and intensity in each of the songs. Every time I listen to this record, I discover something new. The depth of the album keeps it interesting, and makes me feel compelled to keep going back for more. Although I'm still very excited for the next Menomena effort, Ramona Falls' "Intuit" is a great album in it's own right. I'd definitely recommend it!
seriously surprised by this album
just got it and i am seriously surprised by it. out of nowhere it hits you. beautiful. buy it now.
unfortunately will end up on those "Best Album Nobody Heard" lists
Despite the great review it received on Pitchfork, I just have a feeling this beautiful record won't ever get its due. Maybe some filmmaker will grab a song off it, or a visionary car ad maker...otherwise, there just aren't many outlets for music this complex, clever, catchy but unpretentious.
Though I love Menomena, keep this up, Brent, if you can manage.
thanks!
