The young earnest voices of emo pioneers Jimmy Eat World have turned older and wiser. Dreams have become reminders of paths not chosen and the younger generation is taking over. “Heart Is Hard To Find” begins on a tentative note, singer Jim Adkins waking up on the wrong side of the bed, with a sweet mid-tempo tune in his head. “My Best Theory” wakes up the band, but it’s without the old reckless abandon. “Evidence” continues to sound like a latter-day Replacements album where life had given the songs new shapes. “Coffee and Cigarettes” is more working-class grinding. “Action Needs an Audience” bounces with harmonies and an allegiance to power pop. The title track is an acoustic-derived ballad with roughed-up lead voices and sweet backing vocals. The band that once stood for youth and boundless energy are now comfortable playing in the old man’s bar where a new audience (or the old audience similarly aged) can relate. The Deluxe Edition includes an acoustic version of “Coffee and Cigarettes” and a jacked-up rocker, “Precision Auto,” that’s louder than most anything on the album proper.

"Invented" is, by definition, a "grower" album. After the first listen, you'll probably feel so-so about the first half (the pacing seems a bit uneven at first) and really love the second half of the album. But after a few listens, you will absolutely love it. Their opener, "A Heart is hard to Find" seemed a little bit of a downer after the first listen, but it is easily one of my favorite tracks on the album now. JEW fans are sure to love the closing songs, "Invented" and "Mixtape" which continue their legacy of killer closing songs. It'll be different than fan favorites "23" and "Goodbye Sky Harbor", but just as good in its' own rite.
Here's my advice: Download, listen to the first half patiently, tune in for the second half, and then let the whole album play a few more times and you will definitely fall in love with it. It is leaps and bounds better than "Chase this Light" (their last album) and takes what they did best in "Futures", "Bleed American" and "Clarity" and put a new and welcome spin on it.
If you love Jimmy Eat World, this album is worth its' weight in gold.
Hurts
It really hurts to say, but this is definitely the most disappointing album I've heard in years. I own every Jimmy Eat World album and have listened to each one 100+ times. I don't think I'll make it to 3 with this one. I'll be at their show tonight wishing it wasn't so.

finally after another 3 years of waiting, jimmy is back! the new cd is amazing! best tracks are my best theory, coffee and cigarettes, movielike, and littlething. this time around, jimmy eat world goes back to the clarity sound, with some bleed american and futures mixed in. jimmy cant leave u disappointed! if u like all their cds from clarity to chase this light, u will love this. its like a combo of all 3 previous cds. thank u jimmy eat world for another great one!
