The young earnest voices of emo pioneers Jimmy Eat World have turned older and wiser. Dreams have become reminders of paths not chosen and the younger generation is taking over. “Heart Is Hard To Find” begins on a tentative note, singer Jim Adkins waking up on the wrong side of the bed, with a sweet mid-tempo tune in his head. “My Best Theory” wakes up the band, but it’s without the old reckless abandon. “Evidence” continues to sound like a latter-day Replacements album where life had given the songs new shapes. “Coffee and Cigarettes” is more working-class grinding. “Action Needs an Audience” bounces with harmonies and an allegiance to power pop. The title track is an acoustic-derived ballad with roughed-up lead voices and sweet backing vocals. The band that once stood for youth and boundless energy are now comfortable playing in the old man’s bar where a new audience (or the old audience similarly aged) can relate. The Deluxe Edition includes an acoustic version of “Coffee and Cigarettes” and a jacked-up rocker, “Precision Auto,” that’s louder than most anything on the album proper.

Disappointed
I have never been disappointed with anything that Jimmy Eat World has put out...until now. If you are a die hard J.E.W. fan, then this album is a must. But if you are just browsing through, go ahead and keep browsing. The album starts off different and solid, making you believe that they are going somewhere good...but it never gets there. Jimmy Eat World are great musicians and I know they can write better than this. Every album they have is amazing in it's own way, but this one did not do it for me. Jim Adkins is amazing at writing melodies and that is what is lacking in this album. I'm glad I own it, but I'm afraid it will end up as a coaster on my coffee table. However, I have never given up on them. They've been a band for 17 years now, so a bad album was bound to happen. I thought Mark Trombino coming back to produce them was going to be the best thing for them, but it turns out they were better off without him.

The J.E.W We Once Knew
This is as close to a return to the Jimmy Eat World sound from Futures that we could ask for. Not so much Bleed American, as it's not as heavy at any point. At least though, it's not the overproduced pop fest that was there last cd. I enjoyed alot of songs from that cd, but felt the sound just didn't fit them.
The biggest flaw to Ivention, is that lyrically it's not the groups strongest effort. Some songs start off great, but end up being a too repetitive. Prime examples are "Heart is Hard to Find" and "Evidence". Both are great songs until the repetiveness kicks in. "Coffee and Cigarettes" would be a much better track if it didn't such a similarity to the previous song "Movielike". The cd really ends on a high note though with several top notch tracks, including "Littlething", "Cut", "Invention", and "Mixtape". Those bookended with the quality first three tracks make this a pretty solid effort from the guys. 4 out of 5 from me!
