iTunes Review

Iron Maiden’s debut contains the seeds of a revolution in the heavy metal community. With tough, unrelenting rhythms, an emphasis on difficult and technically proficient guitar solos, and themes centered on warriors and medieval subjects (instead of sex, drugs, and rock 'n’ roll), Iron Maiden helped encourage the entire next generation of underground metal practitioners. The straight-ahead aggression of “Running Free” is the closest the group would ever come to mainstream hard rock. More to its temperament: the minor-key, soft-hard dynamic of “Remember Tomorrow,” the creepy seven-minute epic “Phantom of the Opera," and the rapid-fire gallop of the instrumental “Transylvania.” Original lead singer Paul Di’Anno has the shrieking and vibrato-emphasized vocal effects that became the standard for metal vocalists (alongside Judas Priest’s Rob Halford and Black Sabbath’s Ronnie James Dio). Second guitarist Dennis Stratton delivers his share of signature riffs, but the band’s patented twin-guitar attack of Dave Murray and Adrian Smith was still one album in the future.

The Rest Is History

I remember buying this on vinyl at a nearby campus record store. I bought it strictly because of the album cover. Never had heard a single note from this band. At the time I was really into Kiss, Starz, Sabbath, Judas Priest, UFO, etc.... I had a pretty good idea from the album artwork the music was going to be in the same same vein as those artists. Went home dropped in on the turntable and was blown away by the power of this music. There was so much raw, heavy, almost punkish energy that I heard that day. It took me awhile to get used to the vocals, for they were rough edged and unrecognizeable. However, the rest of the bands performance was astonishing. Loved the guitar work and as a fan of UFO loved the fact that the bass was actually an instrument brought to the forefront instead of left in the back to provide filler. Little did I know at the time I was purchasing the first chapter in what would become on of the greatest Metal bands ever... the rest is history.

Great Debut Album

There's a reason that Iron Maiden grew to be so famous. From the beginning, they were awesome.

Known for such powerful hits as "Two Minutes to Midnight" and "The Trooper," Iron Maiden were and are one of the most influential bands of the heavy metal genre. The often-imitated band has existed for over nearly four decades, pumping out wild rock similar to Judas Priest. Iron Maiden have always been an underground attraction; although failing to ever obtain any real media attention in the U.S. (critics claimed them to be Satanists due to their dark musical themes and their use of grim mascot "Eddie"),...
