iTunes Review

Pulsating keyboard grooves, angular guitar thrusts and a dollop of decadent glamour made Duran Duran the perfect flavor for the early ‘80s. Though they were labeled New Romantic pretty boys at the start, the group proved itself adept at cutting well-crafted hits as well as posing for fashion shoots. “Planet Earth” (sci-fi ennui jumping to a pop beat) and “Girls On Film” (brittle yet sexy) became influential singles as well as trendsetting MTV videos. Singer Simon LeBon’s jaded croon filled these tracks with a seductive urgency, while guitarist Andy Taylor reeled off funk-spiked guitar lines. Those descending deeper into the album basked in the moodiness of “Night Boat,” luxuriated in the insinuating “Tel Aviv” and bopped to the disco-matic energy of “Is There Anyone Out There.” Layers of contradiction teased the listener — were these handsome young Brits mocking modern love, celebrating erotic obsession or doing both simultaneously? Duran Duran’s fans didn’t parse such subtleties and simply surrendered to the album’s high-gloss charms as the group ascended to stardom.

Where's the original extended version of Girls on Film????

Back in the day, Capital Records decided to re-release this album after Duran Duran's insane success with Rio and in doing so they added the out-of-place "Is There Something I Should Know" and cut the original extended dance version of Planet Earth. The album cover featured here is the original, however this is not the original line-up and I wish I could find the ORIGINAL extended version of Planet Earth -- which I believe was the first song on the LP. It was brilliant and really showed off John Taylor's true gift of the throbbing New Romantic/post-Disco bass.
I rate this 3 stars simply because iTunes has disappointed me with not featuring the original self-titled album version.

Possibly one of the Greatest Albums Ever

Every last track defines itself. Few artist initiatives so well lay the foundation of their time- this album does it with sublime perfection. Though some may think it's synth effects and brooding vocals too reminicent of its age- listen to Tel Aviv and tell me that the track would be foreign in a set by Digweed or Van Dyk. This collection of track is the bedrock of all that is Duran....and it is their best collection of work. though known for Girls on Film, Is There Something I should Know, night boat, Sound of Thunder and Tel Aviv are by far standout tracks.

Great album then and still is!!!

I still have this LP, the US and the UK release. They need to get up the stuff that was not so easy to come by. I still have Carnival, Nite Romantics, Tiger Tiger, and some other 12'' singles. We need all that stuff in a digital format!!
Here me itunes please! My LP's are in good shape but to buy them to replace those would be the greatest!!! EMI are you listening???

Duran Duran personified new wave for much of the mainstream audience. And for good reason, too. Duran Duran's reputation was built through music videos, which accentuated their fashion model looks and glamorous sense of style. Without music videos, it's likely that the band's pop-funk — described...
