Having written all the songs for 2010’s IIthaca, Paula Cole is in clear command. Her dramatic piano pieces eyeball stadiums but play just as well in the den. Leadoff cut “The Hard Way” is prime Cole. Her voice works the octaves, layers into thick harmonies and trails away to leave a piano that explores its own lovely melody. The song is about her divorce, which is also referred more obviously in “P.R.E.N.U.P.,” which features legendary sideman Marc Ribot (Tom Waits, Elvis Costello) on banjo. “Waiting On a Miracle” plays like a striking old-time R&B ballad. Cole flies up to the top of her range with easy action and ends the song with some chilling wordless coos. Her identity took a few hits and these songs face that crisis. However, the album also embraces her new life. “Somethin’ I’ve Gotta Say” questions whether she wants to go on with music after the birth of her child. But “Music In Me” makes clear: there is still enormous inspiration and ability inside of her. Her talents are immense.

You know all is right with the world when Paula Cole puts out a new album. Nothing else really seems to matter when you've got music this good playing in your life.

Beautiful

The first few notes of the album echo, This Fire, which gave me goosebumps. Another gem gifted by Ms. Cole to all lovers of music, life and the choices we make along the way. Her voice, stunning as always, shines and the production value is excellent.

A true return to form

There's one thing that never changes about Paula Cole, she's a true singer-songwriter--she's the real deal. She chronicles her journey to "Ithaca" by returning to her classic sound. On songs like "Music in Me" and "Somethin' I've Gotta Say," catchy and poppy is the name of the game (think "I Don't Want To Wait" catchiness). The classic elements are shown, with Paula producing the album and playing many of the instruments on the album creating a lush and inviting sound. "Sex" is essentially "Feelin' Love" part two with a nice outro, and "Waiting on a Miracle" chronicles some of Cole's hardships. Some of the 'This Fire' anger can be witnessed on "The Hard Way," which is ultimately uplifting - as is much of the record such. "Elegy" is the standout track, building up into an incredible and vulnerable sound. "P.R.E.N.U.P." is a C.R.A.C.K.-U.P. Ithaca is a welcome change after the jazz-oriented "Courage" in 2007.
