It's All About Fun
In the 1980's, the band Candy had an album titled "Whatever Happened to Fun?" Well, Webster just answered the question. Webster was clearly having fun making this album, and it shows. From the Beck-like vibe of "Brother Billy" to the Rick Springfield inspired "Working for a Living", Webster weaves his songwriting magic and signature vocals into a cornucopia of muscical styles. Mind you, not all of the material is fun and frolic. On the contrary. "My Hour has not Come" envokes a dark, grungy feel akin to Alice in Chains, and "Walked Away" echoes the sounds of Simon and Garfunkel (you can almost imagine Webster sitting on his Brooklyn stoop writing the song). "You Belong to the Earth" has a classic 70's rock ballad feel with haunting vocals atop some beautiful guitar work by Carl Basler. Throw is some of Webster's super catchy tunes like "Baby Daddy" and the title track "It's All About Me", and Webster has made an album that is undeniably a joy to listen to.
Monday Morning Check-In
This recent group of great songs by Billy Webster proves what I believed when I started to listen to his music a few years ago: he needs to give us more. His writing and performing are clearly influenced by an eclectic and fascinating taste. You can tell he likes really good music. I have a feeling he appreciated the combo tribute to Lady Gaga and Kiss on Glee. That's what makes him an artist: smart, fun, richly inspired. And the arrangements are always fine, topped by his reedy vocals. Do what I did, get a bunch of his recordings and keep coming back to them to feel good.
Fantastic album...
In the interest of full disclosure, I've been a huge fan of Billy Webster for about as long as he's been making music, so I might be a little biased. But being so familiar with his music for so long, I think I can honestly say that this is his best album yet. Great vocals, fantastic guitar playing by Carl Basler, but most importantly...amazing songs. My personal favorites..."It's All About Me", "Baby Daddy", and "Brother Billy". I would highly recommend this album to anyone.
