iTunes Review
The Cars drove out of Boston with an exciting debut album that immediately established them as one of New Wave’s most promising bands. Their pop hooks were undeniable and “Just What I Needed,” “My Best Friend’s Girl,” and “Let the Good Times Roll” are among the six tracks from that debut featured here that point up all the band’s immediate strengths — their tightly packed harmonies, their space-age, yet melodic synthesizer lines, and guitars that cut through traffic with exact precision. Their subsequent albums would jigger the formula a bit, leading to more catchy pop (“Let’s Go,” “It’s All I Can Do”), further studio experimentation (“Touch and Go”), more radio-friendly pop for the ‘80s (“Shake It Up,” “You Might Think”) and the perfect melodramatic ballad (“Drive”). Through six albums, the Cars defined and refined an era, balancing between careful polished productions that gave them an extra sheen and the emotional turmoil that lurked beneath the hood in the pained expressions of songwriter Ric Ocasek and the smoother, stylish vocal turns of the late Ben Orr.
Customer Reviews
One Of The Best Bands Of All Time...
I grew up listening to The Cars on the radio, and saw my first cars performance on Saturday Night Live. They performed, Since Your Gone, and it was one of the coolest shows I had seen at the time (even on TV). I am still amazed when people are just discovering the band. Their sound is still so cool and listenable. They were rebellous and innovators of the new wave rock sound back at the end of the 70's. Before there was MTV and VH1, at the dawn of music videos, The Cars hosted a late night music video TV show and changed the playlist from what the producers wanted, introducing us to a bunch of then alternative bands that were out and less known. Their first two Cars albums almost entirely through are great. And there are no less than 4 great songs on every album. The review wrongly degrades the Door to Door Album, but in fact they had just had their biggest successs with HeartBeat City, and World tours. They took a brief break while the 1st greatest hits album came out, and resumed with Door to Door, and had decided to strip down their sound a little bit, since their last album had taken a ton of time in the studio with production. By the time they released it, the musical landscape was changing, and they weren't selling out shows. Ric O. decided to call it quits.
They have such a huge playlist of great songs in their repore that it is almost unfair to not let you hear the box set, for all that you are missing. This Complete Greatest Hits is truthfully better than the original greatest hits Album, only because there are more songs.
