iTunes Review

Though Lyle Lovett emerged in the 1980s as a genuine country singer, he could never be held to strict stylistic limitations. His musical roots encompass gospel, blues and pensive folk-based singer-songwriter concerns. As a result, his albums have veered wildly, never settling in one spot for long. While its title It’s Not Big, It’s Large, Lovett’s 2007 release, suggests the bright swinging group he introduced on his third album, 1989’s Lyle Lovett and His Large Band, the music contained herein, despite the spirited opener, is mostly Lovett in his quiet, introspective moments.  “Don’t Cry a Tear,” “South Texas Girl” and “This Traveling Around” work as successive ballads, while “The Alley Song” with its weeping violin chasing Lovett’s perfectly mournful vocal are what Lovett does best. The barrelhouse piano of “No Big Deal” and the extra funk of “Make It Happy” nearly put Lovett in the barroom, but he’s too much the mild-mannered gentleman to ever really convince anyone that he lingers long in those environments.

Don't call it country

Although this was a long time coming, Lyle always delivers. The Large Band goes back to his earliest releases and in some incarnation has toured with him regularly over the past 25 years. This time it's 38 members strong and demonstrates that practice does make perfect. Lost Highway "gets" Lyle and it shows. My only quibble is with categorization of "country" - you have jazz, blues, gispel, big band, swing and more. Even the simplest lyrics are not simple on second , third and fourth listen. Lyle is the master of intelligent music with that refuses to take itself too seriously.

Dang they're good...

The greatest thing about Lyle Lovett is his variety. In any art form, whenever one has trouble categorizing the work, it's a sign of true talent. Lyle does this to country music every time. Beyond the usual mix of jazz, swing, semi-pop and country, he expands to traditional folk and (my favorite of the album, "Up in Indiana") bluegrass. He and his band consistently illustrate what country music was and could be if you'd take out the stage explosions, wire harnesses, distortion pedals, and music executives. This is pure music played by extremely talented individuals who have a love for the song, not for an image. Check out the DVD as well (included in the store version)-- you get a feel for the whole process. Well done Lyle, Band, and all involved.

Large and In Charge!

A true artist! Listen and you will.... laugh, smile, and remember why you are a LyleLover!!! One question... where is "Keep it in your pantry"? He sang it live this summer and I couldn't wait to hear it on this new album. Another AMAZING album from Lyle and the gang! Thank you for making my year!

Born: November 1, 1957 in Klein, TX

Genre: Country

Years Active: '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s

Lyle Lovett was one of the most distinctive and original singer/songwriters to emerge during the '80s. Though he was initially labeled as a country singer, the tag never quite fit him. Lovett had more in common with '70s singer/songwriters like Guy Clark, Jesse Winchester, Randy Newman, and Townes Van Zandt, combining a talent for incisive, witty lyrical detail with an eclectic array of music, ranging from country and folk to big-band swing and traditional pop. Lovett's literate, multi-layered songs...
