Album Review

Big Sandy & His Fly-Rite Boys have added a stronger dose of rockabilly rhythm to a few cuts on their seventh album, It's Time!, but otherwise they haven't changed much — and there's nothing wrong with that. Big Sandy and company have earned a richly deserved reputation as one of the best retro-country acts on the current scene, and It's Time! boasts 14 more examples of what makes them so much fun. Big Sandy has a big, warm voice that's well suited to vintage styles without ever sounding as if he's mired in the past, and his band understands that a light hand (which guitarist Ashley Kingman and pedal steel man Jimmy Roy have along with chops to spare) is what makes vintage country swing. And It's Time! gives the band a healthy variety of material to play with, including the Cajun-flavored "Bayou Blue," the jazzy "Money Tree," the rockin' "Chalk It Up to the Blues," and the swing-centric title cut, while the live-in-the-studio production by Joey Altruda captures the roomy but dynamic sound of a good live gig. In short, if you dig Big Sandy, It's Time! will chart high on your personal play list, and if you're not familiar with their uptown twang, this is a pretty good place to get started.

i saw them at a local bar in philly

after getting hooked on these guys from a listening booth at a local record store, enough was not enough! i had a friend get all the cd's online when i couldn't purchase them myself. this album came out as the group was appearing at a neighborhood restaurant. it is pretty darn good! the band and i and another fella had some fun yacking after the other folks went home. Big Sandy signed all 10 of my cd"s. good album good bunch of guy's!!

GREAT band!

I will say that I have a VERY varied and eclectic taste for music. Lately I've been getting in to Wanye Hancock and Dale Watson, who are pretty good in their own right, but... THIS will blow your socks off. Some seem to classify this as rockabilly, but it's much more. While its base IS country/rockabilly, there are a lot of interesting time changes and flashy guitar licks to suggest otherwise. Big Sandy's vocals are slighty reminescent of Elvis, but also of Bradley Nowell from Sublime fame. Indeed this band, especially on "It's Time" has a very relaxed feel overall and I can maybe sense a bit of reggae or ska in there somwehere, but just enough to give it an easy feeling. I really like this sound!

Rockabilly is still alive

Big Sandy and his Fly-Rite boys are one of the best rockabilly bands out there. All of their CD's are a must have. I myself have them all. :)
