iTunes Review

Damon Gough, a.k.a. Badly Drawn Boy, hit writer’s block after 2006’s Born In the U.K., but four years later he sounds completely refreshed. This 2010 release recalls the warm intimacy of Gough’s earliest works, leaning on acoustic arrangements to make the complex statements. “In Safe Hands” features recessive vocals that swim in reverb like the early Cure. “The Order of Things” dwells in a forlorn corner where Gough sounds like a British Glen Campbell staring into Galveston Bay. “Too Many Miracles” expands the arrangements to sound like a mild carnival of sorts. “I Saw You Walk Away” and “This Beautiful Idea” kick up Gough’s version of isolationist pop. “What Tomorrow Brings” works as melancholy folk. “You Lied” has an imagistic ‘60s pop swirl reminiscent of the Clientele. “A Pure Accident” casts an abstract somber timbre. Gough is at his best when he settles into modest surroundings, letting his vocals drift along without effort. He always made for a brilliant slacker. The nearly twenty-minute bonus cut-title track included with the Deluxe Edition is a conversation piece of laid-back psychedelic interplay.

Customer Reviews

I wish I liked it

Another reviewer described it as "dreamy," and I suppose that's a good way of putting it. I agree that it will be best served with a cold, rainy, fall afternoon. So sad to write this review, though. I just kept saying to myself, "Maybe the next song will pull me in," but it just never happened.

It's What I'm Thinking

This album is wonderful from cover to cover. I'm always impressed with Damon's songwriting. Each album is so unique. This guy reminds me so much of Elliott Smith and I love every second of every song.

It's what I'm thinking too.

I suppose it’s almost impossible to not compare this album to The Hour of the Bewilderbeast. But let’s do it anyway, shall we? Photographing Snowflakes is exactly what the name implies: It’s dreamy. It’s bittersweet. It will make a lovely companion to wander through your city with, savoring the crimson leaves, anticipating the crisp smell of cold. Damon Gough, you’re kinda awesome. Thanks for this.

Belying his status as a narcoleptic slacker icon, Badly Drawn Boy proved himself a tireless pop songwriter, with arrangements that reflect a great deal of creativity. Born Damon Gough, he began recording after meeting the like-minded Andy Votel at a Manchester nightclub. The pair formed the Twisted Nerve label, and Gough debuted as Badly Drawn Boy with an EP and several singles. The recordings dovetailed nicely with the experimentalist pop fringe of artists like Scott 4 and the Beta Band, and the...
