How much can one person stand?

I am a huge mark for Melissa (and a big fan of iTunes originals), so I was ecstatic to wake up to new music Tuesdays and see this offering. After three listens I have come to the following conclusions. Melissa the songwriter is best when she has some pressure on her, not quite out, not quite happy, not quite there yet, the queen of longing. Melissa the singer is best when she is on stage, alone and acoustic. Melissa the person is best when... well... we love it when she is happy (but it weakens her writing). Great insider info and biography. A couple of kicking acoustic versions of older songs. But you can see how wonderful her early work was compared to the new tracks.

The Only One

What can be said? Melissa could record "Mary Had A Little Lamb" and it would be fine with me. I agree totally that she is at her best with just her voice and guitar...and her angst-filled earlier work I think is some of her finer stuff. The thing to remember is that Melissa has always been true to herself, her music and her fans. She has taken us on the journey, good or bad, and allowed us to bear witness to her personal pain and triumph. Few artists are willing to take such chances, risking the loss of "fans" because the music has "mellowed" or taken a different turn. I admire that courage and Melissa continues to be a source of inspiration and comfort in a chaotic and often soul-less world. Thank you, Melissa...stay well and don't ever stop writing.

An intimate journey with Melissa

A mostly acoustic selection reminiscent of her Live & Alone tour, with tracks interspersed with Melissa talking about motivations, inspirations and her battles in love, life and the things that make her iron strings resonate with all of us, her fans and, through this collection, friends.

Melissa Etheridge became one of the most popular recording artists of the '90s due to her mixture of confessional lyrics, pop-based folk-rock, and raspy, Janis Joplin/Rod Stewart-esque vocals. But the road to stardom was not all smooth sailing for Etheridge as she debated behind the scenes whether or not to disclose to the public that she was gay early on in her career. Born May 29, 1961, in Leavenworth, KS, Etheridge first picked up the guitar at the age of eight and began penning her own songs...
