An Underrated Cellist
Jian Wang’s elegant sensibility immediately swells through upon hearing the first track. His performance of Prélude in G Major possesses an amazing attention to detail. A listener can easily follow the movement of the performer’s bow as it supplely sways back and forth to the rhythm. There are moments when the cello expands, lifting into the air like giant hot air balloon. Yet there are moments when the sound softly wanes into urgent whispers creating a tenacious balance — a certain drama that cannot be found in other musicians’ version of The Cello Suites. Certainly more renowned and overtly overrated, YoYo Ma’s attempt at the Suites rushes through the notes. Ma sacrifices grace for accuracy and speed — Wang’s Prélude is 2:50 minutes, while Ma’s stops at 2:21. This 29-second difference separates the pop star from the artist.

Man, i play the cello, and Jian Wang is a great cellist!! I am playing Arioso right now, and I'm trying to sound as beautiful as Jian Wang plays! Buy this album!
Better than Yo-Yo Ma? I didn't think it was possible.
I am 18 years old. Because I am so young, some people may not believe anything I write. But, I am also a music major, so I know good music when I hear it. This is by far THE BEST recording you will find of the Bach Cello Suites. I am simply entranced by these works. And the performance of them by Jian Wang is amazing! Better than Yo-Yo? Yes, definitely. Like previous reviews have mentioned, look at the length of the first track. It truly shows the difference between the pop star and the artist. Simply stunning! This recording has inspired me to take cello lessons this summer. $19.99 is completely worth it! And this is the recording to get!
