iTunes Review
The second release of Ryan Adams’ 2005 trilogy, Jacksonville City Nights represents the strongest foray into his country roots since his days leading alt-country heroes Whiskeytown. Jon Graboff’s pedal steel guitar is featured front and center, alongside tinkling honky-tonk pianos and some of Adams’ most heartfelt vocals. “A Kiss Before I Go” is pure Nashville, filled with clever barroom insights (“Can’t see tomorrow with yesterday’s eyes”) and a natural-sounding hook, while “The End” ponders the Jacksonville of Adams’ youth until he can only moan. “Dear John,” a duet with Norah Jones, is no Gram Parsons meets Emmylou Harris, sounding more like the end result of an evening spent overindulging. It’s a wasted vibe in every way imaginable. Better are the moments when Adams curtails his excesses and plays to his strengths. “Games” is a slow, economical piano ballad that fully displays Adams’ intuitive vocals, twisting a word or releasing a note into a sigh for emphasis. Overall, this album is uneven, but luminous in spots.
Customer Reviews
Love it or leave it
At this point of Ryan's career, you either are completely into him or you've long abandonded him. He's one of those artists that really don't care much if you like what he does, he'll keep doing it anyway. He's (overly) prolific and with the sheer amount of songs he puts out in any given year, there are bound to be some misses. This and the last album are much more about moods and themes than quick catchy riffs and hit singles (as compared to Heartbreaker). This is an Album not a collection of tunes, so it should be bought the old-fashioned way, in one piece. Also, I wish iTunes would hire some reviewers that actually like music. What happened to the very clear and insightful AMG reviews?
Jacksonville City Nights
I am 58 years old, been around for a long time, Ryan Adams maybe the best singer, song writter I've seen since I saw Jackson Browne in Calif. in 1970. Knute 2
Ryan Adams success...
The lyrics are stunning and the melodies are even moreso. If you're looking for a procession of "Love is Hell" you have to look hard. However, if you're into Whiskeytown and Ryan CD's like "Heartbreaker" this is your gig. I love it.
