Customer Reviews
Not completely "Funky", but Good
This double CD presents — in rough chronological order — songs performed by women affiliated with James Brown and his stage show. Because it spans the early 1960s to the late 1970s the range of styles is necessarily broad, with the earliest tracks probably the weakest material in my view. The earliest styles progress from a proto-soul/doo-wop sound to a more Motown-like pop-soul sound. One gem from the early songs is "I Found You" performed by Yvonne Fair, which is the original version of what became one of Brown's signature songs: "I Got You (I Feel Good)". A little more than midway through Disc 1, we're treated to Marva Whitney's "Unwind Yourself" from 1967. For the rest of Disc 1 and almost all of Disc 2, tracks by Whitney, Vicki Anderson, and Lyn Collins really get the funk going. Other standouts include Collins' "Mama Feelgood" (a previously unreleased long version), "Think (About It)" (not to be confused with the Aretha Franklin song), and "Rock Me Again (6 Times)". Though there's still some filler on Disc 2 (a track each by Kay Robinson and Shirley Jean & the Relations), these are the songs that sell this collection. While a few haven't aged as well as others, most will sound better than anything found on today's radio. Overall, I give this collection 4 out of 5 stars. Some of the lesser songs seem to be included just for completeness or to represent a certain era. About three-quarters of the tracks are the heart of the CD and live up to a James Brown "Funky" standard.
Classics Revue Revisited
I originally rated this with four stars, but since it had been so long since hearing such great soulful classics, I gave it all of my best. This brought it all back and reminded me of when I used to go to the great James Brown Shows back in the mid-sixites in Kansas City. That was when Bobbie Byrd would open the show with "I Got My Mojo Workin' ", followed by Elsie Mae "TV Mama" belting out "All of Me". Few people realized that James was so good at recognizing the great talents of the day; perhaps because he was so far ahead of his time. The only Diva missing was perhaps...Etta James.
Timeless
Like the beat a lot ----- Above The Law's Freedom Of Speech is an example of how a sample should be
