iTunes Review

James Taylor’s self-titled debut album — after an earlier EP with rougher versions of several tunes here — is a tour de force.  “Sunshine Sunshine” and “Something In the Way She Moves” were covered by Tom Rush on his legendary The Circle Game album that introduced Taylor, Joni Mitchell and Jackson Browne as songwriters of the future. Those tracks plus Taylor’s definitive “Carolina In My Mind” and “Rainy Day Man” are proof of his instinctive genius. His personal songwriting, including his tale of the mental ward, “Knockin’ Round the Zoo,” set the tone for the introspective singer-songwriter wave that would be a major force in the early ‘70s. As the first release for the Beatles’ Apple label, it proved the talent level was going to be formidable. Paul McCartney adds bass. This remaster was overseen by the same Abbey Road engineers who handled the Beatles’ brilliant remasters. There are four bonus cuts here, including fantastic demos of “Sunshine Sunshine” and “Carolina In My Mind.” Taylor’s voice was a solid gem and the easeful “Brighten Your Night With My Day” and “Circle ‘Round the Sun” illustrate the brilliance that would make him a star.

Hooray!

Finally, the original version of Carolina In My Mind with Paul McCartney on bass and George Harrison on backing vocals is available. Thank you Apple Records and iTunes for finally working out an arrangement to make this recording available. It is so much better than the Greatest Hits version.

no WAYYY!

This is my favorite James Taylor album, with Beatlesque production cues, avant garde instrumental segues between tracks and a vibe of experimentation. Been waiting for this to be available digitally for quite some time . . . Beautiful.

Brilliantly Remastered!

From vinyl to CD to the 2010 remastered disc, this has always been one of my favorite albums. And with this new remaster, the album sounds absolutely crystal clear and more beautiful than ever. As I write this I'm listening to Circle 'Round The Sun, which is an under-the-radar gem, and should rank up there with his other love songs. The orchestration now envelops you in a way it never has. The demos are a nice addition, especially hearing Sunny Skies and Let Me Ride in their original incarnations. Now we just need Warner Brothers and Columbia to remaster all of the other JT albums!

When people use the term "singer/songwriter" (often modified by the word "sensitive") in praise or in criticism, they're thinking of James Taylor. In the early '70s, when he appeared with his introspective songs, acoustic guitar, and calm, understated singing style, he mirrored a generation's emotional exhaustion after tumultuous times. Just as Bing Crosby's reassuring voice brought the country out of the Depression and through World War II, Taylor's eased the transition from '60s activism and its...
