Album Review
With Gold Mother becoming an unqualified smash in their homeland, the record was later issued Stateside as this self-titled 1991 release. The song that earned them U.K. commercial clout (and a spot on college rock play lists) was the infectious "Sit Down," with its hypnotic, shuffling melody and heart-on-its-sleeve lyrics. With the same effortless craftsmanship of earlier releases (and a newly revamped lineup that had left them a septet), James also contains the dense, droning "Come Home" and the percussive, wry "How Was It for You," both of which also (and deservedly) found favor with listeners. In keeping with prior releases, the lyrics are a mixture of disaffected outsider observations, tempered with optimism, delivered with warmth and earnestness by frontman Tim Booth. With winning melodies and a dose of humor (the take on televangelists "God Only Knows"), James is a record that earned the group new fans and is well-worth checking out for those who might be new to them.

so awesome
I love James. I love the "Come Home", "God only knows", "Gold Mother", "Sit Down" and Ia very happy that James i together again and I am dying to go to their concerts. Love their music.
You Really Need To Listen To This Great CD.
I own 7 James CDs. This was my first. I heard "Sit Down" on a local college station, and have been hooked on them ever since. I recently tried to put my favorite James songs on one blank CD, and there was room for only 15. Four of them came from this CD, and I wish I had room for more. There is no other group on the planet with such great melodic hooks and quirky themes. They're difficult to describe, but nobody sounds like them. I'm really happy they put out so much material, and their latest, "Hey Ma", continues what they started with this CD. Truly unique and wonderful band. My only regret is that I never got to see them live.
Oh dear....
Well James.. Im sorry, but listening to this album was more painful than the night I spent on the toilet after eating to much spanish rice. This al"bum" came out in 1991 right? Well everyone knows how horrible 1991 was... So that must be the reason for this destruction of all sanity... I dunno if anyone knows this, but each one of these songs has a double meaning, that has to do with the lead singers life. I will list off all of them:
Sit down: is about when he sat in his first race car.
Come home: is about how he was trying to find his way home, but kept running over wild sloths running across the street.
Government walls: is about how he had to serve time for running over the sloths. Also because that is where the members of "James" met. They were all in prison.
God only knows: the were all sentenced for life, and then one day they were miraculously let
free early by the sloth ruler.
You can't tell how much suffering (on a face that's smiling): is about how they all went to an awards ceremony despite suffering the affects of colon cleanses.
How was it for you: is about their interest in how a colon cleanse went for you.
Lose control: is about how they all went on a diet together and lost 100 pounds! So they could outrun the sloths.
Walking the ghost: when the wild sloths came back for revenge!!!
Gold mother: is about when they hit the motherload of gold! That they found while hunting down the sloths!
Top of the world: is when they were all rich and skinny and they all sang their final song on the edge of a cliff surrounded by sloths.
