Album Review
Composer Thomas Newman has carved out a niche for himself with atmospheric scores that blend the traditional with cutting-edge technology, so it comes as no surprise that his work on director Sam Mendes' Gulf War drama Jarhead radiates with the kinetic energy of battle while mirroring its emotional complexities with regional instrumentation and thoughtful cues that reflect the human side of war. That said, Newman has chosen to orchestrate Desert Storm with a baton that's been dipped in Mendes' signature black humor, referencing techno, worldbeat, and even hip-hop within the confines of a traditional action score. Mendes, who along with Kathy Nelson executive produced the soundtrack, works contemporary pieces in by everyone from Bobby McFerrin ("Don't Worry Be Happy") to Public Enemy ("Fight the Power") with both a wink and a jibe, resulting in one of the more visceral collections of film music since the Dust Brothers' work on David Fincher's Fight Club.
Customer Reviews
The song at the end credits
Kanye West's "Jesus Walks" the version in the film is instrumental. The song actually does have words and is an excellent track. Half the good songs aren't even on here.......so much for me getting it. Great film though.
Nothing Special
Somewhat repetative, the music really only shines in the context of the movie. To be fair, that's what it was created for. Also, the song that most people assosciate with the movie is missing from this ST ("Jesus Walks") in addition to Nirvana's "Something in the Way", which is also absent. I give it a generous 3 stars.
In The Words of Jake Gyllenhaal . . .
. . . the soundtrack to Jarhead is "kick-@ss!" *Jake Gyllenhaal was the lead actor in Jarhead.* And he's right! My personal favorites: -Welcome to the Suck -Raining Oil -Battery Run -Full Chemical Gear -Desert Storm -Zoomies -Pink Mist -Listen Up I love the new techno take on soundtracks! Completely unexpected for a war movie, really. All songs are excellent, but the ones above ^ are EXCEPTIONAL, all rated 5-star by me. Even if you haven't seen the movie, the soundtrack is completely worthwhile.
