Album Review

Jars of Clay manage to put a bit of spirit into their rock & roll. But the spirit isn't one of deceased loved ones or demons, but of religious enlightenment. This album revolves around the band's Christian beliefs, but never comes off as preachy or judgmental. It includes the hit "Flood" and also covers such topics as child abuse and the manipulation of modern man. Produced with the help of Adrian Belew, this album shines.

Customer Reviews

I love this album!

All great fires begin with a single spark. This is the spark that started the phenomenon that is Jars of Clay. I grew up with this album, and I love it. My favorite songs are Liquid, Boy On A String, Flood, and Worlds Apart. If I were you, I would buy those songs, if not all of this excellent album.

Great album

5 stars, grew up listening to this album and still love it! One of the BEST!

A Christian Rock classic from the 90's

In the 1990's, the Christian rock scene was growing and this is a major album from that time. It is a good album and has some great songs. The lyrics aren't shy about speaking of Jesus. The first four songs, along with "Flood", are all winners but World's Apart is soul stirringly great. Compared with these, the middle-of-the-album songs seem slightly lesser, but I wouldn't call them throwaways. Jars of Clay have written many songs since 1995, but this debut album has some of their best.

Jars of Clay were the breakout band of the so-called alternative CCM movement of the '90s, scoring an enormous mainstream hit with the debut single "Flood" and enjoying platinum sales. The group's lyrics may have been exclusively Christian, but their acoustic-oriented music fit perfectly into the folky jangle pop wing of alternative rock radio, at the time a rarity on the contemporary Christian music scene. Such success set the stage for breakthroughs by Christian bands like dc Talk and Sixpence...
