Recorded in the royal court of Paku Alam IX, this music casts a hypnotic spell as the players improvise over rhythmic pulses. The female choir, which chants majestically on the nearly 40-minute, two-part "Gending," induces shivers. The shorter "Bubaran: Nudan Mas" is no less exotic, spotlighting the delicate interplay of the gongs and marimbas.
