Think of pageantry and ceremony, add the rippling interweaving of gongs and other percussion, and you'll understand why this Indonesian music entranced Western ears. Recorded in the royal court of Paku Alam IX, this music casts a hypnotic spell as the players improvise over rhythmic pulses. The female choir, which chants majestically on the nearly 40-minute, two-part "Gending," induces shivers. The shorter "Bubaran: Nudan Mas" is no less exotic, spotlighting the delicate interplay of the gongs and marimbas.
