iTunes Review

Jean Grae has been paying dues on the underground hip-hop circuit since the late nineties, releasing a series of acclaimed albums with the group Natural Resource, and a series of increasingly rewarding solo releases since 2002’s Attack of the Attacking Things. Grae trades in a fiercely confrontational style that hearkens back to the lightning quick freestyle aesthetic of battle hardened golden age MC’s like Big Daddy Kane, Masta Ace, and MC Lyte, and she's as comfortable spinning an extended narrative as she is trading razor sharp lyrical punch-lines. Jeanius is a collaboration with the much feted North Carolina producer 9th Wonder, and as always 9th Wonder’s understated beats are steeped in dusty soul samples and boast a reverent attitude towards groundbreaking producers like Pete Rock and DJ Premier. Those beats make an ideal counterpart to Grae’s intricate cadences, which borrow from Jay-Z’s self mythologizing tendencies on the remarkable “This World” and Big L’s boastful lyrical dexterity on the horn laden “Think About It”. Thankfully Grae is never beholden to her influences and with Jeanius, offers her listeners ample proof that she is an original and accomplished artist in her own right.

Finally Gets a Proper Release

To Jean Grae fans this CD is old, we got it in form of bootleg of a bootleg, many versions of this had bad audio, but was still worth listening to. Jean Grae is at her best on this album, each song flowed into the next, and Jean never lets up. She shows you why many consider her one of the best female MCs to ever grace the mic. If one ever wanted to know what Jean Grae was about, I suggest picking up Jeanius, because she is just that, a genius.

The best female emcee since MC Lyte!!

I'm gonna marry this girl, man!! Sassy, gritty, classy and smart. That's a rare combo nowadays. I originally got this because 9th was doing production. Now i'm glad I have it because Jean Grae proves that emceein is still an art to be heard and y'all need to cop this like NOW!! top 5 songs 1. 2-32's She is talkin mad trash on this one. Reminds you of one of those girls in high school who had a mouth on her but still had a crush on her. 2. The Time Is Now - Not only can he spit, but she can sing. We already know PHONTE can do both so nothing new with him (shout out to Little Brother....with 9th) 3. My Story - Very strong women to be puttin herself out like that. She has my respect on this song alone. 4. #8 - MURDA!! If this ain't a battle rap, then I'd hate to hear one from her. 5. Love Thirst - It says it all. DANG i'm gonna marry this woman, for real!!

ALBUM OF THE YEAR...

Well, this album is in my top five of the year! Incredible lyrics to compliment flawless production! This woman is one of hip hop's best lyricists (male or female) period!!! DON'T SLEEP...

Although she was born in South Africa, Jean Grae (real name Tsidi Ibrahim) will always be a New Yorker by heart. The daughter of two jazz musicians, Jean learned an appreciation for all genres of music at an early age. She attended the High School of Performing Arts as a vocal major and was later accepted to New York University as a Music Business major. Disenchanted by the classroom settings, Jean decided early on that she was more of a hands-on learner. During high school she...
