Great & beautiful song selection
I think Doug Howell and I must have had very similar experiences growing up when it comes to music choices. You can never go wrong with Jimmy Web, and Doug has chosen some of Webb's most beautiful songs for this album. Skywriter and Wooden Planes have always been two of my very favorite songs and I'm so glad they are on this album - they aren't Webb's most-known but they are definitely two of his best. All I Know and Another Lullaby are also just gorgeous here. Howell has a good voice for the songs. Glad I found this!
Jimmy Webb Classics with a Doug Howell Twist
Songwriter and pianist Jimmy Webb's 2010 release "Just Across the River" (available here on iTunes) was among my Top 5 Albums of the Year through the month of October and now this release from his fellow songwriter and pianist Doug Howell joins it on that list. "Jimmy and Me" features Howell's sensitive vocal and keyboard stylings as he offers adept interpretations of 11 Webb-penned classics, including the lyrical "All I Know" (a hit single for Art Garfunkel three decades ago), the artful "Wooden Planes" and the pensive "Shine It On Me," among others. "If Ships Were Made to Sail," a lesser-known composition by the Oklahoma-born Webb, may be the highlight of the entire set. This recording is highly recommended to long-time fans of Howell's music ("I've Been Freed," "Bluer Than It's Ever Been," and "Singer in the King's Service") and to listeners of the work of Jimmy Webb.
A wonderful album
Listening to these songs is like coming home. Doug Howell selects his favorite Jimmy Webb compositions and delivers a masterful CD. Some of these songs were new to me, such as the remarkable 'Lightning in a Bottle' while others like 'All I Know' and 'Another Lullabye' are old favorites from my own music library that never made the transition from vinyl or cassette to CD. It’s clear how influential Webb’s music is to Doug who responds in kind with an equally inspiring tribute album. Don’t miss this one!
