Album Review
Though this is one of the more obscure Jobim albums, it did introduce what some believe is Jobim's masterpiece, the hypnotically revolving song "Aguas de Marco" (heard here in Portuguese and English versions). Mostly, however, the record lets listeners in on another side of Jobim, the Debussy/Villa-Lobos-inspired creator of moody instrumental tone poems for films and whatnot, with the instrumental colors filled in by Jobim's old cohort, Claus Ogerman. This was supposed to be a breakthrough for Jobim, bursting out of the bossa nova idiom into uncharted territory, yet a lot of this often undeniably beautiful music merely treads over ground that Villa-Lobos explored long before ("Train to Cordisburgo" especially). In any case, Jobim would explore his serious muse with greater success later on. ~ Richard S. Ginell, Rovi
Customer Reviews
Jobim Genius!
Purely the very finest. How can anyone top this fantastic album? The exceptional creative power of Jobim is only matched by his exceptional intellectual genius.
Overlooked Masterpiece
This set originally introduced "Aguas de Marco" [here in English and Portugese] which became another international mega hit in the 70's but it also contains the beautiful "Ana Luiza" which is an overlooked gem in the Jobim songbook. The rest of the lp contains a film score that showcases the gorgeous arrangements by Claus Ogermann . This is not catchy instrumental music as found on "Wave" or "Stone Flower" but longer works of some complexity. If you are looking for new Jobim tunes don't miss the "Ana Luiza" found here. To hear more ambitious Jobim compositions that are inflected with the beauty of Brazil, download the whole cd.
