Although Joe Nichols’s eponymous debut album dropped in 1996, the Rogers, Arkansas country hunk wouldn’t land a hit until his 2002 sophomore album Man With a Memory, which yielded his first number one with the new traditional twang of “Brokenheartsville,” a classic honky-tonk themed drinking ditty. From the same album, “The Impossible” tastefully blends polished Nashville production with one of those heartfelt and uplifting narratives Music City is famous for churning out. Replete with picturesque poetry of tragedies hitting working-class smalltown Americans and their ability to get back up again, Nichols’ textured tenor sounds born to sing songs like “Impossible” and the similarly moving “I’ll Wait for You.” But Nichols also has a knack for rollicking roadhouse twang like “Tequila Makes Her Clothes Fall Off” (a tune that’s as catchy as it is funny) and the playfully risqué wordplay of “Size Matters (Someday).” Like all good country greatest hits compilations, this one comes with a bonus track — the leading “Gimmie That Girl” is a romantic insta-hit perfect for putting on a mix for your favorite cowgirl.

Joe Nichols really is one of the most underrated artist in the music world. If your a fan of country, or just great music, you will be glad that you did. I only wish it had one or two new songs for fans who already own all the hits.

A native of Rogers, Arkansas, Nichols grew up watching his father play bass in a local country band. He himself played in a rock band during his teenage years but soon came back to country and after high school took a night job as a DJ while supporting himself as a mechanic by day.
