iTunes Review
John Martyn was a monster star of British folk music and he expanded his range to include a mesmerizing variety of styles. He never became well known in America, but his music continues to touch those who have discovered it. This tribute features a long and eclectic list of performers recording a great mix of Martyn material. Personal tastes will dictate whether one appreciates those who stick closer to Martyn’s original performances or those who find their own voice. The Cure’s Robert Smith finds an extraterrestrial vibe for “Small Hours.” Beck flies surprisingly close to the ground for a beautiful, earthy take on “Stormbringer.” The Swell Season locate the heart and simple folk beauty of “I Don’t Want to Know.” Vetiver retain the sweetness of “Go Easy.” Fellow Martyn collaborator Phil Collins keeps things simple and touching for “Tearing and Breaking.” Snow Patrol dare to take on “May You Never” and slow its pulse. Skye add an ethereal tension to “Solid Air.” Lots of surprises and genuine love for Martyn’s untouchable work.

Unknown Legend
This is a great tribute to one of the greatest artists you've (more than likely) never heard of, John Martyn. Hopefully some of the more well-known names that pay homage to this master-craftsman will attract fresh ears and open doors for those unfamiliar with Martyn and his music.
This man was a genius....
Do yourself a favor and check out these John M.albums : "One World", "Bless the Weather",and "Grace and Danger" ( there are more, but start here). Not only a genius songwriter but a virtuoso guitarist and stunningly soulful singer . This cover collection is predictably up and down, which is par for the course with tribute albums, but have to give points and stars to these tracks in particular, which capture the spirit of the originals plus bring something new to the table ; "Small Hours'-Robert Smith ( best cover on this record, one of John's greatest songs ,gorgeous!),"Solid Air"-Skye ( this songs been covered before, but this version is beautiful),"Head and Heart" -Vashti Bunyan (love the production, beauty),"Hurt in Your Heart"-Judie Tzuke ( faithful version, but Judie does it in exactly her own style, nice) and "Rope S'ouled"-Blackships ( really sweet version of 80's deep cut). Please check out the man's stuff, you won't be sorry !!
