DJ Larry Levan ruled New York’s Paradise Garage in the ’80s with a musically omnivorous playlist that helped define and expand the era’s club sound. Over two and a half hours, Journey Into Paradise recaps his legacy. Smartly sequenced, it groups tracks sonically, moving from lush disco mainstays (Change’s “Paradise”) to sparse, percussive workouts (Tanaa Gardner’s “Heartbeat,” David Joseph’s “You Can’t Hide (Your Love From Me)”), from bubbling epics (Inner Life’s “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough) to New Wave classics (Talking Heads, Yaz). Nine tracks – from Janice McClain to Peech Boys in the first half; Lace, Inner Life and Gwen Guthrie in the second – are heard in Levan’s own remixes. The thrill of great dance music in a moment when its rules were changing is all over this set: Journey is a history lesson with a massive groove.

The arrangements...the introductions...the grooves. What more can I say? Larry Levan is the master of feel good music. It took me over 15 years to find the vinyl versions of these rare club classics. Now, I can download the digital versions in less than 20 minutes. Looking forward to seeing more garage, house, and Detroit funk cuts on iTunes in the near future.

Buy this album right now. I had to rummage through dusty bins at independent record stores half way around the world just to find some of these gems. All you have to do is point and click. It is not fair. Larry Levan is the master and Journey Into Paradise is the truth. The standouts are Don't Make Me Wait (Peech Boys) and Inner Life's Ain't No Mountain. You have taken the Gay Pimp way back to Paradise Garage.

Neglected by many because of his early death and lack of recordings, Larry Levan is one of the seminal names in dance music, a legendary inspiration during the 1970s and '80s. Influenced by David Mancuso's seminal Loft parties, which presaged disco by more than five years, Levan took his cue and transferred those communal vibes to clubland with one of the most famed night spots ever, the Paradise Garage.
