Album Review

The beauty of Roxette is that the duo of Per Gessle and Marie Fredriksson can do practically anything in terms of Top 40 music. From the quiet desperation of "Spending My Time" to the chanting carnival of "Joyride" to the folky "Church of Your Heart," they bring a worldliness to their lyrics and melodies that most pop A-listers don't even have the imagination to dream of. This, the follow-up to their breakthrough disc, Look Sharp!, sees through on what that collection hinted at, meaning most of the songs sound like they were designed to be hit singles, not just filler between two or three good cuts. "The Big L," "Soul Deep," and "Hotblooded" all follow in the successful vein Gessle and Fredriksson mined with "The Look," while "Fading Like a Flower (Every Time You Leave)," an insistent rock ballad, and the accordion-driven "Perfect Day" take things down a notch. The low-key "Watercolours in the Rain" and the whining "(Do You Get) Excited?" are the only cuts that keep the album from being a total success. For the most part, though, this is two pop artists at the top of their game.

I never thought i'd like this Roxette .. but the more you listen to them , you realize their tunes are very catchy and have a great beat..music to sing along to, really. They were all over the radio with Fading Like a Flower in '91 and the other songs on here are equally as good..save for maybe a couple like big L, Do You Get Excited? and Watercolours..

I take a fresh listen to this album, the culmination of pop rock during George H.W. Bush's administration, and I can't help to shake my head and see how dated it is. It takes me back to a time when Bryan Adams and Phil Collins were still releasing hit after hit, but none as good as their stuff in the mid 80s. Roxette was the fresh, hot band taking on the veterans of pop rock. Metal hair bands were at their peak thanks to Guns n' Roses, Metallica, Warrant and a bunch of wannabes. Gangsta rap was still too underground. Madchester with their Stone Roses and Happy Mondays never crossed the Atlantic. Depeche Mode, Red Hot Chili Peppers and R.E.M. would be playing on pop rock radio along with Roxette, but leave them as soon as a storm from Seattle rushed in. That storm was an album called "Nevermind" that was released months after this one. At that very moment Roxette became yesterday's news. So consider this album their last hurrah, still a guilty pleasure to some. Unfortunately, and I don't understand why, Roxette decided not to put in this album their mega-hit "It Must Have Been Love" which was part of the soundtrack for the movie Pretty Woman.

Incredible! Hit filled!

I remember the first time I listened to this CD. This was the first CD I'd gotten of them but I loved their songs so much. I FELL IN LOVE with "Fading Like a Flower" Marie has a fantastic voice and her and Per are a winning combination. This CD is awesome. The title track is playful and "Watercolours in the Rain" is simple, elegant and powerful. Their lyrics are awesome, I am forever a fan!

It's tempting to write Roxette off as nothing more than a shallow pop/rock band, but their shameless hooks are precisely what makes them so enjoyable. Roxette has a knack for writing extremely catchy and simple hooks and melodies that are sweet but not saccharine; it's radio-friendly pop, but the hooks...
