Album Review

This 40th anniversary edition of Garland's seminal Judy at Carnegie Hall recording is a completely fresh experience even for those intimately familiar with previous versions. By accessing tapes which have not been used on any other release — including the pricey DCC gold disc — many sonic foibles which plagued the original have now been repaired. The overwhelming success of this album, which initially spent 95 weeks on the charts and garnered five Grammy Awards, makes it a prime candidate for a sonic overhaul. By reclaiming tapes that were once considered MIA, the sound is now notably more balanced. In addition, much of the fake applause has been thoughtfully removed, unveiling previously masked dramatic pacing and audience interplay between songs. But the highlight of the entire package is the return of "Alone Together" from the actual Carnegie Hall performance. The song had been replaced by a studio version on the 1989 CD reissue due to missing master tapes. Since then, those tapes have been put back into commission and provide the jaw-dropping sound on this delightful set.

There is a good reason that Garland historian Scott Schechter titled his specially-penned liner notes essay "Two Hours of POW!" With relentless verve, Garland takes on her entire musical catalogue with astonishing aplomb. There is little sign of the decades of self-abuse which had left her frail by the early '60s. But what we are fortunate enough to have is the magic and youth of her voice. Especially poignant are "You Go to My Head," "Just You, Just Me," and her quintessential reading of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow." Judy at Carnegie Hall is far and away the finest live performance to be issued during her lifetime. The numerous improvements made on this 40th anniversary edition will no doubt serve her legacy well.

Amazing is such a small word to describe it

Without a doubt in my mind and in my heart I can honestly say that this is the best album I have ever listen to in my entire life. Judy Garland sounds so wonderfully and it is such a joy to hear her sing live and to talk to the audience and tell a few of the many stories of her life that you just don't want this album to ever end. She truly sounds beyond amazing... She sings most of my favorite songs.. and well there are just too many of Judy's song that I love that I know it would have been impossible to all be here in this live concert album recording but each and every song here just reminds me why Judy Garland was the best entertainer in the world and my one and only all time favorite singer, actress and performer... And I'm only 25 years old and still I can say from the bottom of my heart that I don't think we'll ever get to see someone that can entertain and perform like Judy Garland did.
THE BIGGEST TALENT To EVER WALK ON EARTH

Oh what a night...

Many called it the greatest night in show biz history. Carnegie Hall, 1961, and Judy Garland had them eating out of her hand, rolling in the aisles, begging for more. My parents were musicians, and I cut my teeth on this album, learning the songs like they were nursery rhymes. Yet even though this music should be dog-eared to me and dead as disco, a fresh listen never fails to sparkle. All these years, and I'm still moved to some combination of laughter, tears and awe every time. The sound is incredibly alive and full on this rendering. The band is amazing. And Judy leaves it all on the stage. Not to be missed.

ESSENTIAL !!!!!

@ Don Dion... This was recorded live one night as one full concert. I forget what song (Rock-a-Bye You're Baby... maybe) is the last song of the conert. The first encore is Over The Rainbow... and she's done... NO WAIT!!! Swanee.... applause applause... more applause... She says, "we only have 2 left... audience.. BOTH! She does After You've Gone... "Aren't you getting tired???? NO!!!!! O.k.... we'll do Chicago! This is a MUST HAVE!
