iTunes Review
So the Interpol frontman takes time off from his main band to record a solo album that mostly sounds like an adventurous Interpol album. Julian Plenti (a.k.a. Paul Banks) uses his Ian Curtis-Joy Division-inspired vocal delivery to bring about the same core of eerie isolation. His voice is more expansive, but that’s what years of singing to a carefully contrived aesthetic will do. Banks loosens up vocally, but musically he’s every bit as high tech as the next technologically advanced studio hound. The acoustic guitars that begin “Skyscraper” are not to be left alone and as the tense, hypnotizing riff builds to a crescendo, the keyboards add menace, and the spoken words barely leak out amongst the powerful walls of sound. “Games for Days” is more to the point, an insistent guitar-based new-wave pop tune updated for the new millennium. “Madrid Song” uses found sounds, messy keyboard lines and loose melodies for a feeling that the end of the night is upon us.
Customer Reviews
Not just another Interpol album.
I'm glad this isn't just another Interpol album. As much as I love Interpol who is my favorite band I was hoping that Paul Banks would have an identity of his own on this solo project. He definitely came though and all the songs are pretty solid. I'm happy to hear it and it's going to take me a couple of weeks to sift through what I think about each song. So far so good and this was worth the wait.
Simply AMAZING
If you wanted an Interpol record, this is not it. If you're a true Paul Banks fan, like myslelf, you are getting everything you could ask for and more. How he can front the most amazing band ever, then record a solo album that is so different, blows my mind. This record shows off his diverse talents, from upbeat tracks, like "Only If You Run","Fun That We Had" and the stellar "Games For Days",with Sam on drums,to the sublime atmospheric soundscapes on "Skyscraper",his versatility astounds. There are no weak spots on this record whatsoever. If you're not tapping your foot along with the horns on "Unwind",check yourself for a pulse! I love the use of strings and an upright bass;things you don't really associate with Interpol. I love Interpol and can NOT wait for the next record, but this will more than pass the time until then.Thank you Paul and BRAVO!!!!
Plenti's Skyscraper
Less melancholy/autumnal New England—more like Interpol vacations in Orange County. An excellent debut effort and outstanding album. Don't miss this--Banks' voice will crawl in and live inside you. This work does exactly what you want music to do: it goes deep and stays deep. There are plenty of bands whose music you can like, or like very much, but few that you can really really love. Banks is a candidate for really loving it.
