iTunes Review

Brighton Music College birthed the essential pop band the Kooks, who are said to stretch their boundaries with their 2011 album Junk of the Heart. But it isn’t anything likely to alienate fans of their first two quite enjoyable pop albums. The title track is an immediately bracing pop tune with a bright melody, a catchy lyric and the kind of smart instrumentation that makes their music such an enduring escapade. “Rosie” throws a rowdy choir behind the chorus. “Taking Pictures of You” slows down and works out a beautifully languid soundfield of airy synths and backwards guitars. “Time Above the Earth” is an orchestral number with carefully arranged strings. “Runaway” works with a low-budget synth looping around the vague reggae rhythm and a wonderful falsetto. “Killing Me,” tucked into the album’s center, is a powerful ballad. Though the band’s name is taken from a David Bowie song, the group actually reflects the sounds of ‘60s groups such as the Kinks and Love even more.

Kinda Boring

I loved The Kooks' first album, Inside In/Inside Out. It had a great energy, and the follow-up Konk was not as strong but enjoyable nonetheless. This however, seems to indicated that Pritchard and co. are spinning their wheels making boring, saccharine music. While Junk of the Heart is not the worst thing in the world, it's really inessential.

I liked them better when they were ripping off the Police.

Wonderful!!!!

Great album!!! Loved it!! I recommend it to anyone!! Luke is terrific as always!!! Long live the kooks!!!!! :)

Love it

At first I didn't like it, but after a couple more plays I really started to dig the sound the brought with this new album. Bands change their sounds all the time. It's called evolving. Would you really listen if they kept releasing the same thing over and over again? It keeps it fresh.

Thank you kooks for being awesome.

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '00s, '10s

Luke Pritchard (vocals/guitar), Hugh Harris (guitar), Max Rafferty (bass), and Paul Garred (drums) generate the rubbishy garage rock sounds of the Kooks. Named after the song on David Bowie's Hunky Dory, the Kooks met while attending Brighton Music College in the mid-2000s. Each shared a liking for the Police, the Strokes, the Everly Brothers, and Funkadelic, and the bandmates began funneling such influences into their own sweet and precocious sound in 2005. Before the year's end, the British foursome...
