iTunes Review
It’s a daredevil’s task to take on the works of Dusty Springfield, but Shelby Lynne is up for the challenge. Springfield virtually defined blue-eyed country soul in the late 1960s with her expansive and emotive reach. Other singers paled next to her. For this collection of Springfield covers (and one Lynne original “Pretend”), Lynne’s voice is front and center. (She avoids “Son of a Preacher Man,” leaving Springfield’s most famous cut untouched.) Lynne applies a judicious restraint throughout, assigning a nightclub grace to Springfield’s early pop hit “I Only Want to Be You” and taking her time with Springfield’s other standards from the title track to “Anyone Who Had a Heart” and “The Look of Love.” Lynne’s smartest move was to hire old-school producer Phil Ramone who never interferes with the music, but ensures that everything is pristinely recorded, and the small ensemble of musicians are given the room necessary to choose their notes. This beautifully restrained collection is proof that there is power and eloquence in keeping it quiet.

Stripped and Comfy
iTunes, get off your fanny and listen to the cd before you just lump it in a genre. Shelby Lynne is a talented songwriter, but she interprets music, too. She's been "country" in the past, but no way is this release "country." She covers Dusty Springfield! This is stripped down instrumentation, but Shelby's got the same passion and soul Dusty had in the songs. I've just listened to the entire thing and I can see it's going to be in my cd player for quite some time. It's like a comfy, warm blanket for your soul.
Another masterpiece
What a perfect day in Northern California for this album to debut! Rainy, moody weather is the ideal backdrop for Shelby Lynne's new CD, Just a Little Lovin'. I've been anticipating this CD for months and it exceeds my (high) expectations. Rather than replicate Dusty Springfield's beloved masterpiece, Dusty in Memphis, Shelby borrows from the spirit and atmosphere of that former CD to create her own sultry, bittersweet homage. I love that she chose tunes from Dusty, other classics and one of her own genius compositions instead of doing a word by word replication. It's gorgeous - a bow towards Dusty at the same time as being pure, delicious Shelby. Great voice, terrific arrangements, beautiful music. Treat yourself to it.
Dusty Springfield is smiling from heaven
I think that Shelby Lynne may have been channeling Dusty while she was recording this album because I can hear all of Dusty's demons and angst coming through loud and clear. Can't think of anyone that could of done a better job at covering Dusty's tunes. "Pretend"(Shelby original) in which the singer asks a lover to "Hurt me one more night/just pretend you love me" is reminiscent of Dusty's "You Don't Have To Say You Love Me" and "Breakfast in Bed" which has the singer begging for a secret lover's crumbs. Maybe Shelby is living with the same secrets and pain that plagued Dusty Springfield. If so I say, Shelby, come out, come out wherever you are. Worth purchasing.
