iTunes Review

Slave’s fourth album opened a new phase in the Ohio funk band’s storied history. It was their first to feature the vocals of percussionist Steve Arrington, whose inimitable singing brought a distinctive flavor to the hit title song. The other tracks alternate between the more conventional vocals of Starleana Young and Curt Jones, who would go on to form Aurra. “Are You Ready for Love,” “Funky Lady (Foxy Lady),” “Roots” and “Shine” are superlative fusions of smooth funk and deep, throbbing groove. The music is the result of trumpeter Steve Washington’s expert arrangements, as well as the formidable rhythm section of bassist Mark Antone Adams and drummer Arrington. But it was Arrington’s stirring vocals that helped to separate Slave from dozens of other likeminded groups. His singing is exceptionally sexy and vulnerable, but tinged with sinister intent. The fact that his style is ever so slightly off-key is a big part of what makes “Just a Touch of Love” so intoxicating. The off-kilter sensation extends into the finale, “Warning,” which revels in the band’s love of eccentricity.

THANK YOU!

This album gets 5 stars just for finally being available on Itunes, and for the song "Thank You" alone. The 'Just A Touch Of Love' album was a peridigm shift in the carreer of Steve Arrington. A classic Slave album, and to have access to it digitally is incredible. P.S. the song... "Thank You" doesn't have it's full effect on you, without hearing the "Painted Pictures" interlude.

A Classic

I love this album. It is very hard to find. My mother used to play this album to death back in the day. I agree with the previous review that "Thank You" is probably the album's brightest gem, but "Foxy Lady" and "Roots" are also my favorites. So, "Thank You" for making this album available!!!

ABOUT TIME!!!

I was about to purchase some more filler (iPoP) for the pod when I said to myself, "Let's give SLaVe another check." I truly believed that iTunes would never release TRUE FUNK although they did release the previous SLaVe albums and the weaker stuff (post Cotillion Label)...I hit the trifecta...Not only was this available, free of record hisses and pops, it' was at a bargain price. KUDOS iTunes. SO find some more FUNK. If you know SLaVe, this is truly the sonic breakthrough. The preceding albums led to this masterpiece. Thirty years later, it still rings perfect. There is an instrumental to the title track. You can find it on a greatest hits /compilation here on iTunes. Highly recommended. iTunes, it's about time...

Arguably the hottest of the '70s Ohio funk bands, Slave had a great run in the late '70s and early '80s. Trumpeter Steve Washington formed the group in Dayton in 1975.
