iTunes Review
Just Across the River began its life as a tribute album to one of the rock era’s most underrated songwriters. However, producer Fred Molin, an old friend and producer, convinced Jimmy Webb to join the proceedings and the result is an album featuring his most beloved songs in duets with some serious star power, and three solo performances from Webb. Vince Gill sets the tone with his sympathetic reading of “Oklahoma Nights,” rich with harmonies. Billy Joel defers to Webb on “Wichita Lineman.” Lucinda Williams adds a vocal thick with dread to “Galveston.” Jackson Browne brings home the heartbreak of “P.F. Sloan,” the tale of a great singer-songwriter who is lost to the ages. Mark Knopfler adds his gentle, laidback delivery to “The Highwayman.” Willie Nelson remains impeccable with his phrasings on “If You See Me Getting Smaller.” Glen Campbell reunites for “By The Time I Get To Phoenix.” J. D. Souther creates a stunning country-rock moment with “I Was Too Busy Loving Her.” Webb sings alongside and enjoys the moment. These songs have been good to him, and good to us, too.
Customer Reviews
Genius
The man's a genius....let him lend hi own voice to his works! It ain't braggin' if it's true.
Thank you ... The world needs this.
Jimmy Webb can sing these songs any way he wants because they came out of his head. Unless you have ever taken an idea and put it into the form of a song you will never know how rough it is to rewrite it. JW has songs older than the people who collect money on the heartless junk pumped out today. I heard Springsteen redo Born to Run slow it down and he said to him it felt like in that version the people were coming home. He was Right. It was his song.
It was a gift today to find this JW collection on ITunes. I am not sure how many more he will leave us. Pure honest, and filtered only with his heart. There are very small number of singer song writers allowed in the room with Jimmy Webb I hope they take the cue and put something back out there. I have to go now... My cool uncle Jim is in town for a visit. And I need to listen to these versions of these great stories. Aunt Gaga I will be impressed if you can do the same 30 years from now.
A Magical Must Have
The legacy of a true master can be found on "Just Across the River" The songs speak for them self as true classics with superstar artist that add a level of true profection to the masters song writing skills. This is a must have for anyone who loves great songs / great song writing and superstar performers. Definitely deserves a Grammy for this one!!
