Album Review

Although Eric Clapton has released a bevy of live albums, none of them have ever quite captured the guitarist's raw energy and dazzling virtuosity. The double live album Just One Night may have gotten closer to that elusive goal than most of its predecessors, but it is still lacking in many ways. The most notable difference between Just One Night and Clapton's other live albums is his backing band. Led by guitarist Albert Lee, the group is a collective of accomplished professionals who have managed to keep some grit in their playing. They help push Clapton along, forcing him to spit out crackling solos throughout the album. However, the performances aren't consistent on Just One Night — there are plenty of dynamic moments like "Double Trouble" and "Rambling on My Mind," but they are weighed down by pedestrian renditions of songs like "All Our Past Times." Nevertheless, more than any other Clapton live album, Just One Night suggests the guitarist's in-concert potential. It's just too bad that the recording didn't occur on a night when he did fulfill all of that potential.

I also disagree with the itunes review. This is EC at his best. Great licks, great crowd, music as it should be. A great collection.....timeless and classic.

Great Album

I disagree with the iTunes review of this. This is one of my favorite live albums of all time, and it captures Clapton at the Budokan in Japan at the height of his 70's power. Clapton and Albert Lee trade guitar riffs on many tracks and the rest of the band rocks.

Just One Night

What the heck was itunes thinking? Who writes your reviews? Obviously somenone who wasn't around in the late 70's. This has to be one of the top five live albums of the period. Come on itunes....get with it. This album is just one great jam session.

By the time Eric Clapton launched his solo career with the release of his self-titled debut album in mid-1970, he was long established as one of the world's major rock stars due to his group affiliations — the Yardbirds, John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, Cream, and Blind Faith — which had demonstrated his claim to being the best rock guitarist of his generation. That it took Clapton so long to go out on his own, however, was evidence of a degree of reticence unusual for one of his stature....
