iTunes Review
White Hinterland is singer-songwriter Casey Dienel, a true chanteuse, if we may, who is not averse to singing in French (her EP, Luniculaire, is en français), nor is she a stranger to experimental arrangements (they color Luniculaire in neon) or classically jazzy vocal stylings (her debut LP, Phylactery Factory, is full of nightclubby atmospherics). On Kairos, Dienel takes us to a new place, one full of synth pulses and reverb swirl, a hazy, otherworld of dreamy pop. Using her classically trained voice to paint brighter tones over spare beats and ghostly plumes of sound, songs like “Begin Again” and “Bow & Arrow“ work within a pop construct, but barely: something resembling hooks and choruses keeps the tracks from floating away. There are both jazz and experimental touches as play here, for sure, but when Dienel croons — hauntingly, and beautifully — on spacey tunes like “Thunderbird” and “Cataract,” genre talk goes out the window. Who cares? “Icarus” is a stunning, gossamer moment to savor.

pretty cool.
"Icarus" is real chill... i like it!
A Significant change, a well-rounded transition. Well done!
Kairos is White Hinterland's dreamy, surrealistic sophomore release, driven by fantastical beats and charming guitars. Going through the change from a piano-driven band to drum machine and guitar can be difficult, but White Hinterland has made it possible. Highlights include Icarus, a wonderful start off to the album. The dreamy howling bouncing off the wonderful beat, along with such interesting lyrics best describes it, similar to Thunderbird, another very catchy one. Bow & Arrow is another that is one to astonish if you give it a full listen through. If the lovely little sounds at the beginning don't drag you in, the drum beat will. And then a guitar gets thrown in, and the "set me off"'s just completely make you feel. Songs like Huron and Cataract are in the second, more mysterious half of Kairos, and the sounds of both songs just bring you to the bottom of a lake. Magnolias has such wonderful pictures painted into it in the lyrics, along with more of that addicting guitar, if you like that then try Moon Jam, too. No Logic and Begin Again are also excellent, they just make you want to get up and move.
In all honesty, if this isn't White Hinterland's breakthrough album, I will be surprised. I give it five stars, a beautiful work of art, a wonderful story.
Surprising
I stumbled upon this album when i went on pitchfork.com to listen to an animal collective album. Kairos was one of the featered album reviews, and the name of the album, kairos, which means God's Time in Greek, was of particular intrest to me because i had just gotten back from a retreat of the same name. Anyway, i listened to the album start to finish and fell in love with it. There are beautiful synths, sharp, biting guitar breaks, loops of noise, and gorgeous vocals to top it off. I have a feeling that this album will gain a lot of attention pretty soon, and we will be hearing a lot more from White Hinterland. Until then, buy this album and get a heads up on some great new tunes.
