What a great rock cd, Winger is at the absolute top of their game. For what ever reason, Winger has never been given their due, but after this release they demand respect. Lumped with the hair bands of the '80's, these guys stand above the rest with their musicianship and song writing. Kip's vocals have grown stronger over the years and Reb Beach is a monster on Karma, his guitar work rivals anyone over the last 15 years. The one thing that stands out is the depth, there is not a misfire here, they had to work their butts off to produce a work like this. Standouts include Big World Away, Deal With the Devil, Feeding Frenzy and Come a Little Closer. Really I could list them all, what an incredible disc.
Winger Karma - a definite must listen!
This CD is the rocking creation that all Winger fans.....and other 80's music afficianados.....have been waiting 20+ years for. Karma is the result of years upon years of incredibly strong songwriting by Kip Winger and Reb Beach. Once again, they've come together to write ten strong tunes with an incredible hook, monster lyrics and a great feel. This CD rocks hard!
Karma starts out with six fast and furious tunes (Deal with the Devil , Stone Cold Killer, Big World Away, Come A Little Closer, Pull Me Under and Supernova) that want to make you get up and shake your money maker. This is definitely the Winger that we've all loved since 1988! Following these six tunes is a beautiful ballad - Always Within Me - with it's heartfelt lyrics and haunting melody. Feeding Frenzy is another heavy rocker that deals with the media. After All This Time, co-written by John Roth, is a beautiful, romantic, bluesy number that shows the depth of this band. Following on it's heels is Witness, an auditory feast with incredible harmonies and a rock-horns worthy solo by Reb Beach. Clocking in at over seven minutes, the tune is this century's answer to Winger's previous masterpiece, Headed for a Heartbreak. The final tune on the album (bonus track) is titled "First Ending" and was written by Winger drummer extraordinaire, Rod Morgenstein. The tune is an instrumental (piano/Morgenstein and guitar/guest artist Michael Chapdelaine) piece that starts out with an almost Baroque feel, but ends up with a hint of the blues.
While many of his peers in the genre are dealing with issues relating to their vocals, Kip Winger's are just as strong and pure as they were when he was in his 20's and 30's. Reb Beach (who just came off of a very successful Whitesnake tour) is just as powerful wielding his Suhr guitar as ever. Rod Morgenstein, definitely one of this century's most talented drummers, is rock solid on this release and shows a very different side of his talent on the bonus track. John Roth, an accomplished blues musician in his own right, adds just the right spice to the Winger mixture.
Karma is a definite treat for all music lovers and a great addition to any Winger fan's catalogue. This one is not to be missed!
Amazing
Anybody who slammed Winger during the 80's will repent after hearing this album. These guys are A+ musicians. I can't begin to say how superior the musicianship is on this album (or any Winger album). This is rock and roll. I wish I could say that about today's "rock" music.
