Album Review

As could be expected for one of the founding members of A Perfect Circle, Billy Howerdel's debut album, Keep Telling Myself It's Alright, is a suitably ambitious and artistic work that mixes pensive lyrics with equally melancholy melodies. Unfortunately, it is also a decidedly hit or miss affair, alternating between aggression and melancholy in a mix that doesn't always work. The lack of cohesion makes it feel as though Howerdel is reaching for something undefined with this album, but he doesn't quite make it there. Instead, he settles comfortably into a brooding, moody sound that is indebted to his former project by way of grinding guitars and anguished vocals, but does more to showcase his musical skills instead of a sense of emotion or depth. Not that this is an entirely bad thing — though he does employ the help of guest musicians on a few songs, Howerdel sings and plays nearly all the instruments on Keep Telling Myself It's Alright, and while there aren't any virtuoso performances, his ability to create such an atmospheric work is impressive. This talent is at its strongest on "The Stone," where Howerdel juxtaposes pensive verses with an impassioned chorus and powerful (but not overwhelming) guitar riffs. Given that, it's a mystery as to why the song appears so late in the album preceded by the likes of the bland "Defamed" or overeager "Enemies." By relegating his more powerful pieces to the back of Keep Telling Myself It's Alright in favor of more inconsistent opening tracks, Howerdel makes the entire album feel somewhat shallow and emotionally static. Instead of exploring new territory, he seems content in revisiting old successes.

Perfectly Melodic

Billy Howerdel is the main individual involved with this project. For those who don't know who that is he was the founding member, guitarist, and songwriter for the band A Perfect Circle, in which case Maynard James Keenan (Tool) helped out with vocals. It's good to finally hear an album in this day and age that has excellent sounds and melodic melodies. This is not a hardcore rock album but an album that has a calming and excellent alternative rock style to it. Ashes Divide mixes in a lot of piano, strings, guitar, and many other different songs. Howerdel's style of vocals adds in perfectly to the instrumentals that the group has developed and created. You have to remember that this is not A Perfect Circle album so you have to have a separate mind set when listening to Ashes Divide.

Ashes Divide...

First of all, for all the misconceptions out there... Maynard James Keenan is not included within this album. It is Devo H. Keenan, Maynard James Keenan's son. This band really caught my attention because I'm a huge fan of A Perfect Circle and Tool. And when I heard that Billy Howerdel, Paz Lenchantin, Devo H. Keenan, and Josh Freese will be the members of the band, it basically meant A Perfect Circle II. The album is an attempt of "Thirteenth Step" from A Perfect Circle. Almost same concept of mellow melodic songs, with some songs that are heavier than others. Ashes Divide, in general, seems to be a good band. The songs are good, some are great. This band has a pretty good future... I recommend purchasing the album. It has Maynard James Keenan's 13-year old son playing chello for the band!

Another Great Album to Dive Into

Billy Howerdel is known for albums he released under A Perfect Circle. His signature style of deep melodic tunes that dive into the songs themselves taking d-tours using no cliches or formulas is apparent on this debut solo album aswell. He has kept his tradition of qulity songwriting, interesting sounds and ambient textures and created a record that is a joy to hear over and over and discover new elements. Once again, great songs. Mixed by A Perfect Circle and Nine Inch Nails producer/mixer Alan Moulder. Highlights: Forever Can Be, Enemies, A Wish, The Stone Also Listen To: A Perfect Circle - Mer De Noms Nine Inch Nails - The Fragile Drugstore Fanatics - What's Born in the Basement Puscifer - V is for V****a

A one-man band of sorts, Ashes Divide was the next step in the career of former lighting technician and guitar roadie Billy Howerdel. Howerdel, who was raised in New Jersey, first got his start in the music and touring world by working in lighting before moving into the role of guitar tech for Fishbone. While touring with Fishbone and Tool in France, Howerdel struck up a friendship with Tool vocalist Maynard Keenan, which in turn led to the formation of popular mood-metal act A Perfect Circle.
